Great anime, better visual novel
For any parents looking to buy this for their child- this is an adult-ish anime with serious themes revolving around death, illness, and reincarnation. There isn't sex or gratuitous nudity, but if those previously mentioned themes are things you don't want to discuss with your kid- don't buy this for them.I'm going to start this off by saying that the OVA version of this show is horrendous, so please watch this and not that. The animation and music in this show is wonderful. This is another anime based off of a visual novel created by the company Key. Key also made the visual novels for Clannad and Kanon. The anime adaptions for both of those are stellar, and I would recommend spending money on those before picking this up. Not that this isn't a great show, I gave it 5 stars after all. Unlike those other shows, this has a much more linear story and doesn't delve into the back stories of the side characters. I would classify this as a slice of life/romance show, because any other label would require spoiler tags.Another bonus of this show is that the female protagonist has a real and serious problem. It's not about crushes or getting good grades, it's a life-threatening illness. You also get to see her handling herself as a normal person and grow attached to her as an individual. As I said, this is a good show. I will also say that I think Clannad is the best work they've ever done, and I consider it a masterpiece. In truth, I would give this a 4.5 out of 5, but since that isn't an option I decided to go with the 5 star rating. I'm sure that if I watched this before I had seen Clannad, I would have rated it a full 5 stars. If you watch this and find that you really like it- consider investing in the visual novel. You get to learn a lot more about the back story of the characters you see in the anime, and learn a ton about characters who barely appear on camera in this show. I assume this was removed to maintain that linear plot, which some are sure to appreciate. Personally, I found that it just made me want to play the visual novel and get the authentic experience.

A series gone off the mainstream
This show "Air" is a true piece of art. It starts with a typical linear plot and a bit of fantasy and ends up becoming quite testing. The main issue seems to be a confusing or non-clear story as it moves on, but the real turn off for most people could be something unique by dealing with an untested domain of failure.Yes, maybe the core of this series deals with a problem, isolation/alienation or incapacity to bond with other people. This is widespread everywhere, nonetheless the American entertainment industry usually fails to portray or approach realistically. Japanese anime deals with it more often, yet still struggles with the challenge of reflecting it well. "Air" is the best approach to alienation that I've ever seen and therefore the one that has impressed me the most in all my life. This show's portrait of alienation surely uses much fantasy, but its drama and circumstances well make up for that lack of realism. This could be the saddest anime drama that I have seen (maybe 80 or so). The drama gets as deep as in classic movies like "Doctor Shivago" The central heroine, Misuzu Kamio, beats Lara Antipova from my viewpoint. Besides, the fantasy is well deployed because it's used to display a surreal atmosphere rather than the typical average situation of superheroes, superpowers, fights and more overused routines. Even the few fights in the show yield quite unexpected outcomes while keeping the art. The animation and soundtrack are also first rate as well as the English-voice actors, and I normally prefer to listen in their original language. I even bought the CD soundtrack. It seems the base of these qualities are Japanese values, like sharp elegance or work ethic shown every possible way, such as house chores. This series will make you understand why the Japanese cannot believe that Americans enjoy anime. One big reason is that they normally watch what is already very similar to Hollywood's stuff. This series, Air, is not like that at all.

An unforgettable girl
This series pulls you in from the very beginning. I won't make comments on the story. Other reviewers have done a much better job of that than I could do. I'm still trying to sort things out. All I know is, to borrow a phrase from Orson Wells, that this could make a stone cry. Sad to see the misfortunes of someone so undeserving. And her dinosaur growl is so endearing.("ANIME: Storytelling at its best")

Fun supernatural mystery with an emotional conclusion
Very interesting and rather melancholy series that had me in tears at the end. There are plenty of fun and sweet moments, but be prepared for some emotional gut punches too. The ending was a little confusing in places, but I think I have it sorted out upon reflection. Overall the series is worth a watch, especially if you're a fan of Kanon or Clannad.
