So, as the pictures show (and I hoped), thisvitem is NOT a ferro rod type fire starter. Instead it is a fire piston. As gasses are compressed (decreasing the volume) the particles in the gas hit one another and the container more often and harder, resulting in an increased pressure. The increased movement of the particals increases the gas' temperature.With a flammable substance at on end (lint, tissue) the extended cylinder is slammed closed. If done quickly enough the temperature increase will be enough to light material on fire. It seems well made and (frankly) identical to another listing on this site for a large increase in cost.

Very easy to use make sure to Vaseline to lube the piston as well using char cloth to get that burning ember

says its a ferrocium starter but it isnt. no instructions included. had to look up how to use it and though it is well made and looks good it doesnt seem practical to put in my bag. there are other options that do the same thing with less weight this one does look good and is well made though. but it is as heavy as my standard starting kit...

I'm glad I know how to and always carry multiple ways to get a fire started, because I haven't been able to get this thing to work a single time.
