Platform:PC Legendary is a first person shooter for PC and next-generation consoles. Developed by Spark Unlimited, Legendary tells the story of a thief – Charles Deckard - who is duped into stealing the mythical Pandora’s Box. Like Pandora before him, he cannot resist the temptation of finding out what’s inside. By opening the fabled device, he unleashes hordes of creatures thought to be merely the imaginings of our ancestors. However, murderous werewolves, unstoppable gryphons and other creatures of ancient lore prove all too real as they wreak havoc across an unprepared modern world.

This game deserves a higher average rating than it's received
From reading the reviews here, I was not expecting much with this game, but it turned out to be one of the better games I've played in a while. Graphics are quite good, very short learning curve, simple keyboard control setup, and smooth glitch-free operation (except for the glitch mentioned below). The game takes place in modern times, but with a mythological theme, so there are both human and monster-like enemies. Weapons are typical for a decent FPS. Pistols, assault rifles (with scopes), submachine guns, shotguns, frame throwers, rocket launchers, and grenades. Aside from the ammo stashes, you can also pick up weapons from dead enemies.Health is restored by killing the mythological creatures and absorbing their "animus". You can use the animus to restore your health or as a type of close-range weapon that will stun enemies. In fact, some enemies must be stunned before you can kill them. The non-human enemies cover the traditional range of swarming little parasites to huge building-sized monsters. While I didn't pay a huge amount of attention to the story line, it seemed about average and the voice acting was not bad. You often have team members running around with you, but they are autonomous. They tend to wind up being cannon fodder. I thought the setting was very well designed with some novel, though not particularly challenging, environmental puzzles. For those who find linear games boring, this is probably not for them. Personally, I don't have anything against linear games. This game does not allow the player to save his progress. It uses the checkpoint system whereby the game automatically saves periodically. That means that, if you die, you will be set back to the most recent checkpoint. Some of the checkpoints are spaced pretty far apart, so you could wind up playing some sections over repeatedly. This wasn't a huge problem in this game, but there were a couple times that I wished they were a bit closer together. I played on normal difficulty and I don't know if other difficulty settings change the frequency of the checkpoints. Lack of manual save capability was the main factor that kept me from awarding five stars to this game.I found the game to be on the longish side of average length. It seems like many newer games are quite short, so it was nice that it took a while to get through this. This game has one serious glitch. Toward the end, you are to take an elevator to the roof of a building. When you step into the elevator, you get stuck and eventually die. I'm sure not everyone has this problem, but I don't know what triggers it. The answer for me was to change the MaxSmoothedFrameRate parameter in the file PandoraEngine.ini from 300 to 30. You will find the file under C:\Documents and Settings\My documents\My Games\Legendary\PandoraGame\Config\PandoraEngine.ini I found this solution using a web search. I don't know if it will work for everyone. After making the change, you can set it back after you get to the next checkpoint.Over all, I found the game to be a lot of fun and visually interesting. While not a big fan of having super-natural powers (as with the animus in this game) this game kept it simple and useful. I paid $6 (plus shipping) for the game and found it to be one of the better bargains I've some across lately. I highly recommend this game.

Because This Was Amazon not Third Party I want to inform
No Seal, ok. No Wrapper, Um huh. Valid product key included on slip of paper, online registration was smooth, appears to have not been registered by anyone; meaning it could not have been run. Unless they let it be registered multiple times, that is very possible. The software install, which asks for a keycode, lists locations where the number letter combination can be found. None of which are a little glossy slip of paper in the case! It's very nice that I do Not need to run a disk in the dvd drive continuously to play the game, save my pc the wear. I love that aspect of some publications. Box shows internal damage. Otherwise I'm very impressed by the fluid motion of the critters, haven't gotten far yet. Not the purpose of this info though. When not listed as used, most anyone expects a new unopened game. There is no reason to check the inside of the case. I find this very suspect, I think amazon ships out returns. The damage to the clips inside the case, though, is understandable for an old product. Without needing the case, and 6 years ago when it likely walked out for $60, this would have been worth returning for some teenage absolute genius. Very facetious.

Great concept...awful execution.
So I bought Legendary solely for the concept, despite the awful reviews I'd seen on here. Why? Because the premise interested me a lot. Pandora's Box holding all the creatures now regarded as myth, mixed with liberal application of heavy ordinance? That was worth four bucks. However, the developers had a clear target and they couldn't have missed it harder. The game looks awful. When the textures aren't simply failing to load (leaving the models looking like mannequins), the graphics look mediocre at best, and I swear they forgot to edit in the character's head in one cutscene. The writing is bland, although I didn't expect much, but the story is oddly compelling, even if it does leave an awful lot untold and leaves things wide open for a sequel that we'll probably never see. The characters are mediocre, the girl who is worked up to be the love interest is totally dismissed, and the main protagonist is bland as can be, and somehow has a mastery of any weapon he can get his hands on, despite supposedly being only an art thief. However, it's the gameplay that manages to even partly save this. While things are extremely linear, it's actually rather fun, despite some controls being a bit odd (having to hold down a button to aim, rather than simply press a button) and some match-ups being so hopelessly uneven (taking on a gryphon with a shotgun? A minotaur with an assault rifle? Those two were real pains to get through) and the checkpoints being seemingly at random points. Sure, they only roll out six or seven types of non-human opponents (firedrakes, werewolves in two flavors, gryphons, minotaurs, echidnae from greek mythology, two asian-mythology creatures, both of which are annoying as hell to fight, and the kraken for something desperately trying to resemble a boss-fight) but that actually helps, as it prevents you from getting bogged down trying to figure out which two weapons you'll need most desperately in this level. What really lets this game down is the story. They try to work it up as society crumbling to make things seem more dramatic and desperate, but we don't really see evidence of this, and although I shouldn't expect as much from an indie game, it comes off as overly hammed up at times. The unskippable cutscenes get to be a real pain, but it doesn't detract from the game too much. The entire thing ends rather abruptly with a final battle that totally failed to make me care at all, and winds up with a total anti-climax.All in all, it's a decent game that could have been great if it'd had a little more time and money behind it. For four bucks, it's well worth it.

Don't waste your money
This game did not activate with the key code provided. The company, Southpeak games lists a phone number and e-mail for customer support. After three phone calls, (recorded message each time), and four e-mails over a three week period, I have heard nothing. So maybe they're out of business or they all died in a nuclear blast. However, the phone number works and all the e-mails went through. I will send one last e-mail notifying them of my review on Amazon. Hopefully Amazon will grant me a refund. First and last time I will purchase a game sold by Southpeak games.
