Wanted a small, discrete, inexpensive pocket EDC knife for hiking trip overseas. This Kershaw Ember fits the bill nicely. Compact, a little heavy due to the light grey metal scales. EZ open flipper action - very smooth (no thumb stud). Frame lock is smooth and easy to operate one handed. Drop point blade was sharp out of the box. I have medium size hands for a woman and found this knife very easy to hold and manipulate. A little small in the hand, but Jimping on the blade and butt end of handle aids in retention. Retention clip is sturdy without bulk and can be reconfigured for a variety of carry options. Overall, this small knife has a good feel in the hand, is discrete, sharp, great flipper and lock release. Will suit my needs nicely. Highly recommend.

For just over $20 this is a great small knife. It is probably smaller than you think. For example, a crkt squid looks like it could eat this knife, and that one isn't very large. This is a perfect for me blade, as I have tiny hands and it's 2" so legal to carry in California.It needs a lanyard of some sort though to give your pinkie some purchase when using it or pulling it from the pocket. No lanyard hole sadly here, but you can use the clip. Clip position was unfortunately set to tip down carry, which feels just so wrong on the draw. It also doesn't work if you would like to have a lanyard. The only way you can have that with this knife is by attaching one to the clip. So there is a way if you switch the clip position or if you don't mind tip down. It is deep carry.Even with a small hand my pinky totally hangs off the handle with this knife. All that being said, it's really a beautiful knife and whatever coating they used on this blade is awesome. It's a glossy dark gray unlike one I've seen before in any other knife. It's not matte finish like other coated blades. Doesn't seem to attract much dirt, gunk in general and I am willing to bet it cleans up super easy if it does because of that finish. Like just a single wipe with a damp cloth.The frame style lock in this little knife is awesome. The best I've ever seen for a frame lock and I own a few. It is astonishingly easy to push aside to close with one finger. Very easy compares to the similar sized Kershaw Spoke which I also own. This one also flips much easier than that knife, it also acts as a good finger guard when open. You need not apply much pressure to get the speed assist going. Nice jimping for your thumb to rest on when the knife is open. No blade play and is perfectly centered. It's easy enough to close one handed. Very light.This will be the go to EDC knife for me. Perfect in a 5th pocket.

I've been on the hunt for a small assisted-opening pocket knife. Kershaw makes several that fit the bill, and they're relatively inexpensive so I've picked up a few. So far I've purchased the Spoke, the Ember, the Chive, and the Cathode.The Ember is middling in weight amongst those knives, but it has all of the features I'm looking for in a knife. The assisted opening is snappy and reliable. I have yet to have it fail to lock open. I prefer point-up right hand carry, and this knife will do that. It will actually do point-up or point-down, left or right handed. It's also a deep carry clip, unlike my second favorite, the Chive. The blade is shaving sharp right out of the box. It's just slightly thicker than the Chive, which makes it easier to manipulate. The flipper is positioned well, and doesn't hurt my finger to use (unlike the Cathode and Spoke)The biggest downside with this knife is that if you go right-handed point-up, the clip presses hard against the frame lock. This makes it much slower to deploy and harder to disengage the lock. I had to take a bottle opener and pull on the clip to bend it outwards a little bit. It's still very stiff and doesn't have a hard time clipping onto my pocket, but it doesn't press against the frame lock anymore.If you're looking for a good knife with a great feature-set, this one should be on your short list!
