General Remarks
Interesting film. I'm no film critic just an ordinary viewer. I liked the concept and it was an unusual film. I was also pleased to see this topic being handled by a South African film maker which I imagined posed a few issues with release. Thanks to the producers and actors for its production.

Entertaining
A singer has a problem with his sexuality and the film shows how he deals with it - or not. Entertaining movie, perhaps daring for S Africa, but a bit stale for countries that are much further in gay acceptance.

Worth a watch
Just brilliant. Having grown up a gay man in Apartheid South Africa, this brought back so many memories, lots of them sad and resentful, but the story is pur story and the story of those before us. People forget the struggle that gay men fought in SA. Kanarie tells of one such story.

A brilliant movie ! Full of surprises.
I've just watched it and I'm still thinking about it. The script is daring and so original. The actors are so convincing too. Trust me on this one, it's a must see movie. With the film "The Harvesters", "Kanarie" is another jewel from South Africa.

Interesting South African movie drama
Interesting South African movie drama, focused on a young male serving in the army and discovering himself in the 80's.

SUPER GREAT FLICK!
I saw the movie at LA's OutFest and loved it, however, the DVD wasn't laptop-compatible at first. I played it on my stronger desktop and it fixed the situation. I lived through the 80's so I felt quite transported and well educated about the S. Afrikkaan military life. I'm a veteran too so I identify with that aspect as well. It's based on a true story and written by the man who lived it, so I don't understand the previous comment above. He spoke at OutFest. We don't have too many LGBT military flicks so I'm grateful one was produced and the disk finally worked. GREAT JOB all around!

Not Bad for an Foreign Indie Film
As far as coming-of-age, coming-out, or Indie flicks go, I have seen better and I have seen worse. The lead character oddly reminded me of what Lady Gaga might look like if she chose to transition to male. Although set in the mid-to-late '80s, the film did not really transport me back to the era. The main message I got from this film is that it's imperative for teens and young adults to have positive role models--and to choose their idols carefully.
