Shadows of Good Things to Come with This Series?
This series is really picking up, having read everything from book 1 up the five star The Curse of the Ancient Emerald (Hardy Boys Adventures) Shadows at Predator Reef was one I'd missed. Thiis a very engaging, fast moving installment of the series. The reef in question is an enormous 400,000 gallon aquarium designed and financed by a famous architect who decided to make his home in Bayport. The star attraction is a giant female turtle with a partially missing fin, now shaped like a a hook, appropriately nicknamed Captain Hook. At the time of the grand opening Joe just finished his last scuba class before his final with a beautiful but out of his age range female instructor and Frank is giving a tour to school children when the ribbon is cut and it's discovered that Captain Hook is missing. There's a run in with some environmental protesters, showing the other side of conservation. Frank, as conservative as they get, is also interested in conservation and endangered species. He's humorously mystified that when he tries to talk to one of the protesters about the educational value of the aquarium and the long range positive effect on endangered species by teaching people about them that the protester seemed not to even hear him. For me, that was a very enjoyable couple of pages. But it's not preachy. It's action and detection. Joe is fearless as ever, even in the face of an angry shark, and his escape leads to a major discovery in the case. This is a big plus in this story: there's no wasted action in that everything that happens pushes the story forward. Frank is also intrepid, involved in a foot and boat race with a humorous resolution as the villain (or least one) gets away (for now). This time the cover is not from one of Frank's dreams but from action in the book. The clues are all there and shared with the reader effectively, they make sense and they lead the reader to the real villain. The ending is made for TV timing humor at the expense of Chief Olaf that enhances rather than cringes. In this series, like Ancient Emerald, this is an easy five star.

Rating
This book was a great quick read... I enjoyed it thoroughly. At many parts though I wished that it went into more depth and didn't end so abruptly... still was a great book and I would recommend this book to my friends and family!
