Great book Van Halen's early years
This book focuses a lot on the EARLY years to start of, which is WONDERFUL if you want to get to roots of Rock ~n~Roll. I read Noel Monks book which is great for the early touring years with DLR. This is highly recommended for how they started from Childhood on

A Van Halen Story Worth Hearing
I read this book after having seen the band perform in Phoenix, AZ in November 2007. I've been a fan since the early years (mid 80's), but saw them live for the 1st time this year. Although I love nearly everything the band has produced, my loyalties are to the D.L.R. version of the band, and I was extatic at seeing the 'one and only' D.L.R. perform live with the band after so many years. This book really goes places most fans have never been, and gives those die-hards a look at their heros they've never seen before (or ever wanted to). Ian Christie is not a top-notch writer, but the story he tells makes up for his writing limitations. However, I did feel like most of what he said I could have learned by reading everything else that had ever been written about the band. Nearly all of his book came from other, previously published works, by other authors. I am happy to let someone else do the reasearch and wrap it up in a nice, tight, little package for me to enjoy.I would recommend this book to anyone who only knows Van Halen casually, but would like a more intimate introduction. They are a legend which will continue to grow regardless of whether or not they ever release another album. The books ends only suggesting a reunion with D.L.R. I was lucky enough to experience the real thing this past Fall. I hope a new album is in the works. Everybody Wants More, and So Do I!

It's real
.....and fun to read about the struggles they had with sex, drugs and rock n roll, but just as interesting is how the music gets written. Think DR. Frankenstein in a great big old castle playing his heart out on a Kramer. It's alive! And it is. Also, I always hated David Lee Roth. I was wrong about him, now I can't stand him. But he does get points for being happy if nothing else.

A Must For The VH Fan
If you're a VH fan then this definitely should be on your list of reads. I banged it out in two days. The only downside is that it was written prior to DLR rejoining in 2007 so the book leaves you thinking there's little to no chance of the DLR VH ever getting back together again.Fortunately we VH fans know different!!!!!!!

Good - But could have been better
A pretty good overview of the Van Halen's multi-level history. My biggest complaint would be that the book seems as though it was researched like a college term paper. It quotes many, many articles and interviews from Rolling Stone, Creem, etc. as the sources.I was hoping for personal interviews from the actual band members to gain their personal insight into the back stories of Van Halen. I wanted to hear Eddie's thoughts on Dave - then and now. Michael's thoughts on Eddie bouncing him out of the band right before their induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the most anticipated reunion tour in history.I would have even liked to hear Wolfgang's thoughts on being one of the coolest high school kids in history for touring with Van Halen at 16. (That's got to be a great help when cruising chicks, right?)This book was good. That book would have been GREAT!By the way, I just saw Eddie, Dave, Alex and Wolfgang in Philly. They were GREAT! Three songs into the show, Eddie and Dave, both smiling from ear to ear at the crowds reaction, hugged each other and the place went nuts!! Great moment that the fans have been waiting a long time to see.

Buy Runnin' With The Devil book instead.
Good but not The greatest. The author doesn't goes deep into the story, what does not allow you to dive it as well in the story. The book has no tales about VH partying hardly, what it was they did best. It only talks about the sates of the show, how much time they spent working on a song or record, or how much they cashed in some gig. Only to journalistic purposes, not recommended to VH's fans who wants some more fun. Extremely disappointed 😞

OK If all you want is the chronologcal history of VH
Not a bad book if you just want to know what happened, when and where, but lacking somewhat when it comes to the why. No access to the band members themselves, no new insights, and after Roth leaves in 1984 the following years a not given the same amount of detail (rightly so of course if you hate Van Hager lol) but doesnt give a balanced history. Just buy Crazy From the Heat by DLR instead.
