Uptown (Rise and Shine)

The book is easy to read for young children and the illustration is great.

If I were reviewing this for myself, I'd probably give it 5 stars. It's quirky, it introduces us to a new place, and the language is descriptive without being overly wordy. My kids (ages 6, 5, and 2) were able to pay attention to the whole story, and they seemed to enjoy some descriptions (e.g., the rows of brownstones are like chocolate, the buildings with awnings look all dressed up), but the collage pictures were perhaps a bit visually confusing to them, since they know nothing of Harlem, and so it was a little harder for them to truly engage. Still, I like for them to experience a wide variety of books, so this was still mostly a positive experience. They did like it, it just isn't one of their very favorite books.

Enjoyed the story, the illustrations were so lifelike and a child could find his or herself in the story. Will use it when I volunteer to read in my community.I brought two so will give one away to a child to promote importance of how reading can open them to larger undiscovered worlds.

Bryan Collier shows his young audiences that Harlem isn't just a cultural treasure for New York City and for our country, but it's also a happening place to live. UPTOWN a great book to pair with HARLEM: A POEM by Walter Dean and Christopher Myers, as well as the poetry of Langston Hughes.

Love this book!

As a New Yorker, it made me feel good to share this experience with my son.

Books arrived quickly and in great condition! I recently went to the Reginald F Lewis museum for Mr. Collier's exhibit so this was a wonderful find!

Easy to read to my 3yo who loves New York City. Captures Harlem in just a few pages. Illustrations are great.
