Yasmin the Writer

LOVE this book!!! There is so much to love. Love the message: Yasmin searches for a hero — and realizes: its her mom. Love that the author recognizes “mama work” and celebrates it (something our culture doesn’t do often — and should). Also love the intro to Pakistani culture at the end. This is one of my sons favorite books (mine too!). I wish books like this were more mainstream. Thank you for writing this joyous little book! (Can’t wait to read more in the series!)

I purchased each book in this series as a gift for a friend who I work with and shipped them to her daughter weekly. The books are great, colorful and the story is simple and easy to follow! I am very happy with this series!

No only is Yasmin a like able main character, but author Saadia Faruqi makes her relatable and the stories grounded in the lives of every day kids in North America. The books are wonderful for reading out loud or for kids to read on their own.

OH MY GOSH, A BOOK THAT SERIOUSLY VALUES CARETAKING AND HOMEMAKING WORK!!!Ahem, I mean, another excellent Yasmin story, showing Yasmin tackling and overcoming another realistic challenge! This time, it's a difficulty choosing a subject for an essay on "My Hero".The book includes some thoughtful exploration of the different forms a hero can take. Yasmin's friends rapidly choose Muhummad Ali and Rosa Parks for their essays, then later Yasmin's mama helps Yasmin look up a variety of excellent options on the computer. I loved how clearly the story showed that there are many different paths to heroism - and I LOVE the way it handled including "being a mama and homemaker" among those paths. It never suggested that any type of hero was better or worse than the others.Kind of wishing for a sixth star here.
