For every type of bass player
I’m having a blast with this book. I’m a hard rock guy but grew up with most of these songs playing in the house. The documentary “Standing in the shadows of Motown” brought me to this book and brought a new found appreciation for this music. A true study for any bass player. Some songs are difficult but not out of reach. Getting your swing time right makes these songs so rewarding to play. This book and the aforementioned doc are both Highly recommended!!

Excellent book with accurate bass tabs and annotation
Great music book specifically for bass players, with very easy to read tabs and musical notation. I really appreciate that the first song in the book is "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" -- nothing like digging in with Jamerson on the very first song. Great purchase.

Great tool for aspiring players!
I'm pretty impressed withe transcriptions. I have used the "Bass Bible" and youtube to learn the lines as they were recorded and commit them to memory. There's always nuance to a session player's feel, but this is a great collection of transcriptions.

Transcription quality is here
Part of my goal as a R&B, funk and jazz player is to learn from the greats that came before and to that I end I'm studying Jamerson. I bought "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" specifically for the transcriptions and bass tracks. I have to say many of the tracks only approximate what James was doing and I found it somewhat disappointing. Case in point, "What's going on" shows up here and in the motown book and this transcription is MUCH better, though it misses some of the ghost notes and sixteenths here and there. That's OK, I learn the music using the recording plus the notation so I note the discrepancies. Another brilliant song and bass part is "I was made to lover her". This is one of the best transcriptions I have found for any song. The rhythms are spot on. Only one glaring error is about 4 or 5 F#s that should be D# or (Eb) in the notation. It's a consistent error, so easy to correct where it arises. I gave it 4 stars, but as I get through other transcriptions I may bump it up to 5.

It's a great book but the print is too small even with glasses. Which I don't use yet..
My eyes are not failing me yet. The music notations and tablature to small to read. You would almost need a magnifying glass to read this. Other than that what's in it is good info. You should be playing the music on there, not wasting time trying to read that small print...
