This is an easy-to-read reprint of the original 1927 text.
This review is for the Armchair Fiction reprints of the classic 1927 texts. The front cover features the rarely reprinted revised 1944 cover art by Arthur Scott, the back cover features the original 1927 cover art by Walter S. Rogers. The book is standard Digest (Trade) Paperback size, similar to the original release. The text size also matches the original release and larger than Mass Market (Pocket) Paperbacks. The paper stock is standard paper, better than Mass Market paperbacks but not as good as the Syn-Sine Press reprints. The cover is shiny, not matted, resembling the newer Grosset & Dunlap hardbacks. This is NOT a reproduction of the original publications like the Applewood Dust Jacket Hardbacks were. This IS an easy-to-read reprint which brings the original texts back into print and available for all to enjoy at a lower price.

Favorites as a kid, never knew how old!
If you want a true glimpse of the old days of boy scouts this is it. I read it nearly 50 years ago and it was nearly 50 years old then!

Good Story, Some Spelling and Editing Errors
My 7 year old is reading these books and he really liked this one. There are some spelling and editing errors that I really wish they would clean up. The end of the story was a little far fetched (more than normal).

Back to my youth!
I've recently started re-reading all the Hardy Boys mystery books I read 40 years ago in my youth - these really take me back to a better time. Sure, the writing is now almost 100 years old (1920s for the first ones) and sometimes the dialogue is a bit corny, but each mystery is a good story, easy to read, and the story is paced well enough that they never drag...I would love to re-read these with my son if he were with me.

Classic!
I have been reading the Hardy Boys books sequentially to my 8 year old daughter, one chapter each night before bed. The "lingo" is definitely dated and some of the concepts a bit difficult for her to understand, which require some explanation from me. She shows genuine frustration when we reach the end of the chapter and we're left wondering what will happen next. Half of the fun is discussing her thoughts regarding what she believes is going on as the mysteries unfold.I definitely recommend the Hardy Boys series as a great way to spend time with your children. We will soon explore the Nancy Drew series as well.

I definitely recommend the Hardy Boys novels
I definitely recommend the Hardy Boys novels. This is the original version, and has a 5th-6th grade reading level. The books are part of the AR Book program, so your kids can test on them. They present some challenging older words and ideas, which I enjoyed explaining to my son. The mysteries are appropriate for girls or boys, and are quite intriguing to the end. You will find no inappropriate words or innuendo, which is refreshing in this day of early lost innocence.

I don't think anyone talked like that. However
I read the Hardy Boys as a kid. They fascinated me. There weren't many interesting, intriguing stories for 10 - 14 year olds back then. Now, doing research, I re-read it, and find it difficult to follow. That triggered a memory of flipping back to re-read portion (when I was a kid) so that I could understand what was going on. Then, it was exciting, and fascinating. Now, I find the writing simplistic, but the story line difficult. I did laugh out loud at some of the dialogue. I don't think anyone talked like that. However, 'back then' it kept my interest.

Teenage Detectives
For pure excitement and great fun you can't go wrong with Hardy Boy mysteries. After sixty years the story is still as good as ever. A great read for young readers. I would rather enjoy these books and their drama than today's books. Enjoy the series you will always be entertained

This was a good book
The secret of the old mill was a good book to read especially if you like the hardy boys. The one thing that I don't like is the bit at the end where it tells you what the next book is, I just think it spoils the book a bit. But overall a good book.
