The Art of Todd Mcfarlane: The Devil's in the Details Hardcover – December 4, 2012

The media could not be loaded. The Art of Todd McFarlane is a visual autobiography of the comic artist, master himself. It's quite a book to behold.It's a seriously inspiring book. You'll learn about the effort he put into drawing from his schooling days, to the getting his first job and then creating companies like Image Comics and McFarlane Toys. Besides that he has also included the many side projects he's involved in, such as creating music videos, concepts for animation and movie, video games and more.This guy sent out 700 submission letters to comic editors and received hundreds of rejection letters, and collected all the critiques to improve himself. And he actually counted the number of submissions sent?! That's determination, and the quality of his work shows. This guy is the accumulation of talent plus hard work.The artworks showcased are amazing. Very well reproduced, printed big. You'll see his early works, in pencils, ink and colours. The accompanying commentary provides insightful background to the work, and his career progression. He has worked for Marvel, DC Comics, so those works are included as well, as his many Spawn comic art. You'll read a lot about what goes on behind creating comic art.This book is available in hardcover and paperback. At 400 pages thick, I'll recommend getting the hardcover but I've yet to see the binding on the paperback. What I like about this book is the most unique drawings and sketch designs ever created by my idol, the man himself, Todd McFarlane! Including the retrospective of McFarlane about his early life and career.I choose this rating because I thought it was the most interesting and coolest book I read to enjoy and learn, such as the part I learned that Spawn, the character, was originally created as an alien super hero by McFarlane in 1977 before he remade him as a super hero from Hell 15 years later.I would recommend this book to Kevin Smith and the guys at Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash for their next episode of "Comic Book Men" on AMC, LOL! In fact, I would rather recommend this awesome book to all McFarlane fans, Spawn fans, comic book fans, and collectors everywhere!

I got this book for christmas it came in the mal wrapped in a plastic, well protected strong book I can not worry about it being bent because of the nice hard cover. I love todd's art ever since I was in 6th grade and my eyes were on that dark character called spawn. Spawn has ben a major inspiration in my art work, making me drive to become a more successful artist, with todd as a major inspiration in my art and in my life. I read todd's spawn origins as well and he talks about small parts of his success, In The art of Todd McFarlane, He talks about how he started what was his drive and an how he kept going. The foreword is written by stan lee and it is so inspiring to read how he considers todd as one of the best writers and artists. Todd is truly inspirational, how we worked his way up from when he was 16 and until now he has his own comic book empire, "Image comics". I love hearing about this mans success as well as seeing his original pencil sketches and learning about his learning process. It is one thing to see a frank frazetta book but to see a timeline of progress is really moving and really gives me hope as a young artist. Todd mcfarlane isn't just an artist he's a creator of a toy company and his own comic book company, with tv series and a movie. If that isn't inspiration I don't know what is!

I am a casual comic book reader and fan, but whatever level of geek in me began with Todd Mcfarlane and Spawn. When most remember parts of their life with songs, I remember my senior year based on Spawn issues. "The Art of Todd McFarlane is not just cool, it is a beautiful book. For artists/writers, like myself, looking for inspiration, this is a must have. Every colorful image pops out from the pages. As someone who discovered him right before he became a household name beyond the comic book world, it is great to read of his beginning.Great book, great story, amazing art...absolutely a beautiful book!

Not everyone is a fan of Todd McFarlane. For those of us who do enjoy (or enjoyed) his work however, this is an excellent book chronicling the evolution of his art in the medium of comic books. My favorite aspect of this book was that McFarlane dug way back into his artistic archive - as far back as high school - and gave us fans a glimpse into some of his earliest work. This coupled with lots of sketches, original art and printed artwork from his professional career makes for a well rounded and relatively complete viewing experience.The book also sprinkles in a written overview of McFarlanes journey from amateur artist, to superstar comic creator, to successful business man throughout the art. Though not as in-depth as it could have been, I feel that this narrative provides a nice frame of reference for the art without becoming too wordy or biographical.The book itself is printed beautifully on high quality, glossy paper and is a solid 400 pages in length. This is actually bigger than my Alex Ross Mythology art book which is also a very good read.

I love the detail with which this book is done and that the emphasis is placed on Todd's artwork, there's a lot of it. I've loved his artwork throughout the years and this has been a great addition to my collection. This is also my first signed anything by Todd so I love that about it. The signed page is special page that has been bound in the book which he signs and numbers.My only complaint is with the shipping. There was no padding in the box, thus my book took a small amount of damage on one corner of the spine. Not enough to make me return it as I would probably never get a signed replacement.

Been a fan of McFarlane's art for sometime now and was a huge fan of the animated spawn series as well. Just disappointed it only ran two seasons. I have not cracked this book as of yet but knowing what it contains made it a no brainer to purchase especially at the discounted price I got it at as well. Having read comics and collected for quite sometime now and seen McFarlane's art evolve over the years from Marvel to Image and his other side projects this is a must have for his fans in my opinion. If you have ever bought his toys (Dragons series) or any of the comics he has penciled over the years you will throughly enjoy this collection of his art in my opinion.

Love Todd's art from yesteryear? Get this. I did get mine with a corner dinged from amazon's handling BUT it did not detract from the interiors. This is a big book and cannot be missed by fans of McFarlane.
