Modified South Beach Modified Keto
This is an updated South Beach plan, which is pretty popular and HAS worked for friends of mine, so it's not a goofy diet. It's based on lowering carbs and harmful omega-6 fats (non-omega 3 veg oils esp found in prepared foods) and adding protein, few starchy carb vegs and almost no sugar. For those whose doctors allow it, it's a fairly trouble-free regime to follow, with steps to reduce your carb and sugar (mostly) and have you eat whole foods primarily. It's not vegetarian nor vegan. The updated South Beach is keto style but with more protein that typical keto diets, and aimed at insulin-resistance and prediabetes: we ran a "contest" in my office essentially eating like this, measuring blood sugar levels fasting and post-meal and it was interesting as some of us are insulin resistant and one person on the staff was diabetic type II. Then we had a contest to see who could get their levels down the most. It took me eating no sugar, no bread and eating at proper intervals to get my levels to "very good" and that took six weeks. My other contestant had more difficulty but when she went back to her doctor, she had some good progress to report. The kits to measure blood glucose aren't terribly expensive so if you are curious, you can buy one but of course, anything you do, check with the doctor as diabetes is serious and not to be ignored or self treated. But you CAN lose weight and eat things that make your physiology healthier. The book has plans laid out, the usual anecdotes (I skip those, if some guy loses fifty pounds good for him, but he's not post menopausal and a woman. By and large, guys can lose weight easier because they have a different makeup.)The recipes are a bit scant but useful; I was somewhat disappointed in the breakfast choices and of them, I'd probably rely on what they call "egg cups" and what you might know as "egg bites" --steamed scrambled eggs with ingredients added and made in a silicone cup mold in your Instant Pot. They are grab and go type foods and fairly satisfying, plus you can make them in advance if you don't mind cold food and dash off to work with egg cups in a ziplock to eat so you have had breakfast.I do know this will work; low starch and low sugar and low omega-6 oil is nothing new but the plan laid out leads you through this and to maintenance, so it's easy to follow.

Changed My Life!
This book has literally changed my life! I’m 50 and have put on weight over the last 15 years. I’ve got back on track a year ago- eating better and working out 2-6 times a week. I have gained muscle, but not lost weight. I tried WW for 45 days- lost zero. I did full on keto previously but it was way too difficult to stick to- but then I saw an article summarizing SB Keto-friendly in a magazine & immediately downloaded the Kindle book. I read the whole thing- it is exactly me! Insulin resistance is a very real & frustrating health issue and the medically backed explanations given in this book had my jaw on the ground. It all clicked into place- everything made sense- and I started Phase 1 right away. I still work out as I had been too. Day 13- I’m down over 6 pounds. I have a scale that measures Things other than weight- it is not all water weight. My water % is actually up (likely from cutting out alcohol). I am so excited and already feel 10 years younger- can’t wait to see where I am and how I feel at 4 weeks! I loved the book so much I bought a hard copy to refer to- and bought another copy as a gift for a friend. Life changing!

Basically Atkins
There's nothing revolutionary about this plan although the author does spend a great deal of time telling us why he has moved on from some of the basics of his once hugely popular plan. We could all probably use a gentle reminder about excess dietary sugar and the fact that what most of us believe about dietary fat is far from hardcore proven science. Of course, the author highlights studies that support his plan, which for the most part is Atkins, with the phase 1 now telling readers to keep carbs around 50 and on phase 2 to keep carbs around 100. Different from the older SB plans, saturated fat containing foods are not restricted. But speaking of restrictive, the sample meal plans for Phase 1 are about 1300-1400 calories per day, which unless you are a small sedentary person is extremely low. Most of us would want to eat significantly more than that. In the author's defense, he does state several times that the plan is customizable and I'd highly encourage anyone starting the plan to go to an online calorie counter to get a general idea of how many calories you need per day. The old SB plan was pretty much "just start cooking the recipes in the book" and don't worry too much on counting. And I suppose you could do that with this book as well but there seems to.be a very Atkins like push toward more strict carb counting. The author's love of good food does not shine through as well in this book as it did in his previous. And for this foodie, that's not a good thing. Strict followers of Keto (with their almost cult like worship of their diet basics and defiance of any scientific literature that counters their beliefs) will probably laugh at this book but for those of us not in that cult, its more approachable and livable plan is much preferred. In the end we should all be mindful of sugar and not be so obsessed with fat as evil. But none of that changes the most important scientific fact the no diet plan can get around. If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain fat. If you eat less calories than you burn, you will lose fat. If I wanted to follow SB again, I'd probably follow the plans and recipes in his previous books as this one is far too restrictive for me to be on long term.

Nice reformed SBD diet plan.
Just finished reading. I have followed strict keto and also the south beach diet at different times in the last 8 years and have had success on both paths, was interested to see how this plan meshed the two and i think i like it! I was thinking this plan may be nice for my whole family to try and it is easier that traditional strict keto so we we will it! This book does address exactly my downfall on SBD which was the slippery slope of “adding things back in” Looking forward to getting my family doing this!

Good book. Well worth it.
This is a good addition to the original books, updated. I have been following this for a week. I have given 4 stars because some of the recepies need translation into British English ie broccoli rabe (tender stem broccoli). How much is a bar of chocolate?

Please do the math for non-Americans
I found this book easy to read; the author’s personal experiences with the diet also helped. The meal plan and recipes were quite easy to follow. The main frustration with this edition is that the measurements are only in imperial, using ounces and cups. It’s already a lot of work preparing all the meals so having to convert every measurement as I went along was a pain. It would be great if someone could do these conversions for future editions.

Updated South Beach Diet.
This is an updated version of The South Beach Diet. This is more keto and low carb friendly than the original book. Glad I bought it.

Expensive recipes
My husband did the SBD while in Arizona and the food was really good. We bought this book to go back on the diet. Unfortunately, the recipes are with a number of products that aren’t readily available in our stores or are expensive. I went to the SBD blog “the palm” and got all the info needed to start the program. The blog is open to anyone and I got the grocery list with allowed amounts and a basic meal plan for women and men. This book is good at assisting in understanding the keto SBD and perhaps if you live in a larger city you will find the products needed for the recipes.
