Remington Steele: Season 3 [DVD]

There should be separate star ratings for dvds--one rating for the show itself and one for the dvd special features. I can't bear to give the third season of Remington Steele any less than 5 stars, but the dvd special features have a lot to be desired.The show itself is as delightful as ever. The witty banter and clever but light-hearted mysteries that characterized the series are all back in full force in the third season. And the writers continue to string us along with Laura and Mr. Steele's relationship, as Steele's attempts to entice Laura into a romantic vacation are constantly thwarted, often by Laura's own fear and skepticism. Although the pseudo love affair is a bit of a tease, the show continues to charm me as much as it did when I was an adolescent.A few reviewers have mentioned that RS goes on location a lot in this season, which is usually a sign that a show is jumping the shark. However, that is not the case with this season. The on-location episodes are some of my favorites, especially the ones in Las Vegas and San Francisco. And the show continues to stay grounded in Los Angeles despite a fair amount of traveling. (As I recall, when the show finally did jump, the episodes were on location.)My only complaints about the Season 3 dvds are related to the special features. The set includes three featurettes-"'Steele Trio' Revealing Character Profiles," "The Baking of Steele in the Chips," and "Steele Michael"-and three episode commentaries: Michael Gleason, Doris Roberts, and writer Jeff Melvoin on "Diced Steele"; Michael Gleason and writers John Wirth, Brad Kern, and Jeff Melvoin on "Now You Steele It, Now You Don't"; and Michael Gleason and Stephanie Zimbalist on "Steele in the Chips."The problem is that none of the people interviewed or doing commentaries has seen the show for 20 years. This is certainly understandable, but why don't the producers of the dvds give them a few episodes to watch ahead of time to jog their memories so they will have more intelligent and interesting things to say? This lack of preparation is especially a problem on the episode commentaries because none of the people commenting have seen the episodes they're supposed to be talking about, and they can't follow the plot at the same time that they're talking. So it ends up with commentary that has almost nothing to do with anything going on on the screen. Also, Michael Gleason tends to tell the same stories over and over again, so if you have the Season 1 and Season 2 dvd sets, be prepared to hear anecdotes for the third, fourth, or fifth time. And the #1 sin of dvd commentaries-the repetitive praising of actors-gets committed over and over.Not that the special features aren't worth watching. The featurettes are pretty interesting. It's nice that they were able to get all three of the actors for interviews. And the commentaries have a few interesting tidbits if you can stand to sit through all the rambling. One very nice treat is that we get to hear a lot more from Stephanie Zimbalist than in previous season sets, particularly in the commentary and mini-feature on the cookie episode, which she co-wrote with a longtime friend who later went on to be hired as a staff writer on the show. I have to admit that, despite my childhood crush on her, I never thought I would like SZ much in real life, but on the commentary she is quite charming and has a lot of interesting things to say. There is also another guy (can't remember which one) on the "Now You Steele It, Now You Don't" commentary who keeps trying to steer the conversation toward something relevant and occasionally succeeds.I just wish they would put a little more thought into it if they're going to bother doing the extra features. It would also be nice if they addressed some of the issues and challenges they faced putting the dvds together. For example, all the music they had to cut. Also, I wonder why they chose to put the episodes on the dvd in the order they were aired instead of the order they were filmed. The current order removes all continuity from the development of Laura and Mr. Steele's relationship. I know the fact that I care about that makes me a big geek, but hey, geeks who sit around watching dvd commentaries are their audience, and they should be aware of that.

Primarily purchased to replace the non-encoded (BLANK) Season 3, Disk 2, Side A of my five season collection of Remington Steele that I'd purchased a while ago but never got around to watching until just recently (ALWAYS check all DVDs upon receipt before stickin' them on the shelf!)

Hardly any tweaks were needed for Season 3, as the show rolled along like a well-oiled machine. Laura & Remington still struggled with their double-edged business/romantic relationship; and actress Doris Roberts had, by now, settled comfortably into the Mildred Krebs role by showing her comedic flair as well as the tough & tender duality of her character. The season began with a typically stylish episode ("Steele At It") as Remington returned to a bit of his past as a thief, stealing a jewel-encrusted dagger for a friend...and in true screwball fashion, managing to get Laura & Mildred involved! This was truly the peak season for the show as the cast & crew cooked up some very diverse & entertaining plots. "Second Base Steele" had Laura & Remington posing as ball players (Laura, a natural; Steele, hopelessly inept) to catch a killer; "Steele Your Heart Away" had Remington revisiting his Irish roots...and getting amnesia (a deftly fine comic performance from Pierce Brosnan); "A Pocketful of Steele" had Remington (once again) brushing up against his past when he befriends a young pickpocket (remember the curly-haired, impish child star Meeno Peluce?); "Blue-Blooded Steele" reunited Steele with his old pal, the charming con Daniel Chalmers (Stephanie Zimbalist's real life father Efrem, reprising his role) in a royal caper which infuriated Laura; "Lofty Steele" had someone tampering with Laura's digs to find a hidden treasure (they went as far as throwing Laura in a padded cell at a mental hospital, just to get her out of the way; BTW, a terrific performance from Ms. Zimbalist); and even Mildred took the spotlight in "Hounded Steele", finally revealing her personal life (poignantly) outside the office. There were familiar faces galore passing through the agency. Some on the verge of stardom (John Larroquette, Geena Davis, Jean Smart, Judith Light), and others legendary (Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford...and from my fave "Cast in Steele": Dorothy Lamour, Lloyd Nolan & Virginia Mayo).And that's just a handful of the episodes I remember well---but honestly, they're all good.As usual, 20th Century Fox did a fine job packaging these episodes. Included is the dandy featurette "Steele Trio", profiling the three cast members & their characters.Like Steele reminiscing about old movies, this DVD set brings back fond memories!

A Gem. This show is truly amazing. Wonderful acting, plots, location...it has everything you could ask for. Many shows are mainly set-based, this show went out of its way to do loads of on-location shoots around Los Angeles and many beautiful vacation destinations!! Each episode is original, well-written and highly entertaining. All cast members are perfectly-cast. It doesn't even seem like an 80's show---it seems very up-to-date and modern in its dialogue and material. I highly recommend adding this to any DVD collection :-)

... wird Miss Holt ihrem vermeintlichen Chef entgegnen. "Und das bin ich!"Richtig, genau wie erwartet zeigt Laura Holt ihrem verkörpertem Traum wer das Sagen hat. "Güte, Aufrichtigkeit, Gerechtigkeit.(...) Um es ganz klar zu sagen, es waren diese Werte, diese Tugenden, die ich vor Augen hatte, als ich RS erfunden habe. Und es war genau dieser Fernsehheld (wir befinden uns in #13 DER SERIENHELD), der mich zu diesem Beruf inspiriert hat." Wie immer hat unser Paradedetektiv einen flotten Spruch als Antwort auf Lager. Doch er kann auch anders: Denken wir an Highlights der Staffel wie das IRISCHE PUZZLE, als er auf der Suche nach sich selbst ist (und irrigerweise zum Schluss kommt "Ich bin Otto Preminger!"). Geniale Slapstickeinlagen (beim Sehen dieser Staffel ist mir das wieder sehr bewusst geworden) nebst einem ungeklärtem Beziehungsstatus runden das Gesamtpaket der dritten Staffel ab. Doch es ist nicht nur Brosnan, der ein wunderbar komödiantisches Talent sein Eigen nennt und immer wieder augenbrauenzuckend zur Höchstform aufläuft. Es sind auch die Autoren rund Gleason, die all ihr Herzblut für die Serie und das Alte Hollywood vereinen, um solch eine funkensprühende Staffel zu kreieren.Erinnern wir uns: In Staffel 1 fand zusammen, was zusammen gehört, die Funken sprühten und man begann sich lagnsam anzunähern. Die 2 Staffel brachte in der Hinsicht dann nicht viel Neues - die Bande festigten sich weiter. Und wurden erweitert um Doris Roberts, die der Serie zum I-Tüpfelchen verhalf. So musste die dritte Staffel mit Neuem aufwarten. Das tut sie einerseits, indem sie sich diverser Trips in die Alte Welt, das Alte Europa bedient. Und so beginnt in einer Vorzeigefolge das Drama um "Bleiben wir nur Partner im Beruf, oder auch in der Liebe??!", an der Riviera, und was könnte aufregender, mysteriöser und funkensprühender sein als der Querverweis auf "Über den Dächern von Nizza", indem RS in die Rolle des zwielichtigen John Robie schlüpft. So eröffnen sich für die arme Laura ganz neue Perspektiven, als sie sich endlich ein Herz fasst und ...Was wunderbar und in rasanter Geschwindigkeit beginnt, ist diesmal (endlich mal komplett in vier Tagen auf dt. erlebt) mitunter doch etwas zu bruchstückhaft, Europa- und PanAm-lastig. Südfrankreich, Malta, England, Irland, die Agäis nebst Venedig, all diese wunderbaren Drehorte mit teils herrlich überzeichneten Handlungen, rasantem Handlungsverlauf und brillanten Dialogen, all das findet in "nur" 8 Folgen der gerade erschienenen dritten Staffel statt und es schleicht sich das Gefühl ein man betreibe PanAm-Werbung. Einerseits wird dadurch neues Leben in festgefahrene Pafade gebracht, bevor es wieder nach Hause -für den Rest der Staffel- geht. Steele wird dadurch wieder zwielichtiger, die Beziehung der beiden wiederholte Male auf die Probe gestellt. Doch auch im bieder-prüden Nordamerika bleiben die Querelen nicht aus, und wir erleben einige Höhepunkte (für mich immer noch Folge #9 mit drei Altstars), einen gescheiterten Pakt und illustre Enden mit Picknick im Südsee-Style (als Kind eines meiner liebsten Enden). Ein Pakt endet, ein neuer wird besiegelt, der für noch mehr Funken in der grandiosen (meiner allerliebsten) 4. Staffel fortgeführt werden wird.Zurück zum Bruchstückhaften der dritten Staffel - RS war noch nie für einen engmaschigen Handlungsfluss bekannt, dadurch ist die Beziehung von L und R ja auch so ungreifbar. Doch in dieser Staffel fiel mir das doch wieder ein klein wenig unangenehm auf. Kaum ist man wieder in den USA ist man - schwupsdiwupps - (total zusammenhangslos zwei Mal direkt hintereinander in #5 und #6) wieder irgendwo in Europa. Da lobe ich mir doch etwas mehr Kontinuität. Wobei das IRISCHE PUZZLE zusammen mit DER GROßE WURF (endlich mal Kontinuität durch Widerling Norman Keyes) und der genialen Screwball-Folge UNTERNEHMEN KEKSDOSE und dem spannenden Abschluss DER KANDIDAT für mich die Highlights der dritten Staffel darstellen.Eine Serie im Wandel, bevor alles in der vierten Staffel seinem (vorläufigen Höhepunkt) zustrebt. Eine insgesamt gelungene Staffel einer genialen Serie. Doch ist mir diesmal deutlich aufgefallen, dass mir die anderen Staffeln, v.a. die vierte, als auch die zweite mehr am Herzen liegen. Andererseits erhält durch das ganze Hin und Her, die Beziehung neue Dynamik, Steele wird undurchschaubarer und schlitzohriger, aber auch tiefgründiger und verantwortungsbewusster (#7 Jugendsünden und #22 Der Kandidat).Um es mit Remingtons Worten zu sagen: "Man muss sich doch auch mal gehen lassen und was riskieren." Recht hat er, wie immer. Oder zumindest zumeist. Diesmal zieht sich wie ein roter Faden die verpasste Gelegenheiten eines kleinen Extraurlaubs der zwei verhinderten Turteltauben durch die 22 Folgen (man denke nur an #19 und den Skiurlaub in Aspen).ZUR DVD: wie gewohnt präsentiert Capelight die dritte Staffel wieder im Hochglanzoutfit in rosa mit Serienfolgeneinleger. Bild und Ton wie gewohnt gut für eine Serie, die immerhin knapp 30 Jahre auf dem Buckel hat. Diesmal fallen die Kürzungen des Vorabendprogrammes mehr ins Auge, durch all die kurzen O-Textzeilen die eingefügt sind. Daumen hoch dafür!Die Extras sind nett, aber nicht berauschend und nicht auf dem aktuellen Stand der Jahres 2016 sondern aus der US-Ausgabe 2005/06 übernommen. Das wären drei 7-10miütige Featurettes Steele-volles, Michaels Steele (recht aufschlussreich, da klar wird, dass Erfinder Gleason mehr Ähnlichkeit mit Steele hat als man denken sollte und sich keinen Weg merken kann, dafür aber unnützes Wissen wie Jahreszahlen alter filme aus dem FF aufzählen kann, en Masse besitzt) und Schreiben mit Steele (LH und ihren Beitrag zum Unternehmen Keksdose). Desweiteren drei Audiokommentare (Der große Wurf, Blütenträume und Unternehmen Keksdose). Freundlicherweise hat man die Featurettes wieder untertitelt.Fazit: Fulminante Geschwindigkeit, illustre Filmverweise, wenngleich auch mitunter etwas bruchstückhaft. Um mit Doris Krebs zu schließen: "Eleganz, Ironie und Humor", drei Pfeiler RSs, abgerundet mit wunderbarem Slapstick und einem brillant-komödiantischem Talent Pierce Brosnans, das sich in diversen Einlagen präsentieren darf.

I've always loved this series and even if it is an icon of the 80s it still doesn't feel outdated when you Watch it today. Great acting, perfect timing of the cues, a lot of fun, suspense and romance. The perfect mix !
