Building Small: Sustainable Designs for Tiny Houses & Backyard Buildings

Models and plans provided with excellent build details
This book was very good as it had great construction tips, material lists, and examples of several types of tiny houses. My favorite was the sugar cube house that was modular, so it could be build in stages and connected together as time and money permitted. I also liked the section on water collection and storage, which is so essential when planning a living dwelling.

Nice book, but would have liked more details about tiny homes.
Nice book but needs more detailed photos of the tiny home layout/ floor plan.

Useful, specific, thorough. Much more realistic than other Tiny House books.
Very useful book. In particular, the "sugar cube" house is an excellent design for a small house that could be disassembled and moved to another site. The book honestly describes the pros and cons of tiny houses. There are interviews and photos from across the country.Unlike many other books on tiny houses, this book is by people who have build a large number of small buildings and published designs that have been constructed by many thousands of people (e.g. Sheds, Treehouses, Cabins.) The plans are specific enough that you will not be stuck at Home Depot without a clue of what to buy.

More than expected
I gave this to my grandson who is building a Tiny house. He said the book was very helpful. Lots of detailed building instructions and pictures.

Good book. I'd like a little more detail on ...
Good book. I'd like a little more detail on the actual building of structures, but still a nice book. Arrived well within the time frame.

with thought and love, by David and Jeannie Stiles
‘Building Small’ was written, with thought and love, by David and Jeannie Stiles. The purpose of the book is to present to the reader new ideas for how to downsize, accommodate in-laws, returning children, or how to create a rental, by building a small home in the backyard away from the main house. It is a beautifully designed book that is nice to hold and to read. It contains gorgeous hand designed illustrations, with straight forward instructions. These two aspects make the book both practical, and a creative masterpiece. You will find one of my favorite parts of the book in the end, when the author interviewed several people who made the choice to downsize. This gave me inspiration to de-clutter in my own home, with an eye to living more freely. I love the space saving solutions, and the suggestions for lighting, insulation and water conservation. I enjoy looking at the pictures of the Timber Frame House, the Japanese Tree House and the Sugar Cube House. The design instructions are easy to follow.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to be motivated to downsize, incorporate new lighting and space saving ideas into his/her current home, and to those who want to build a small structure in the backyard. If you are not the build it yourself type, I am sure you can contact the authors to have them build it for you.

Another solid release....
great variety from David and Jeanie Stiles. I own several of their past books and this one doesn't disappoint.
