A must read for spearfishing fans and history buffs
This book was an eye-opener. Growing up spearfishing in Florida and the Bahamas, I had often heard the Pinder name bandied about, but never really knew who the Pinders were. Well, I do now! Sheri Daye’s wonderful biography on Art Pinder captures not just the birth of a revolutionary new sport, but also lovingly details the man behind the revolution. If you like reading about the legendary exploits of adventurous men, then this book is for you. It’s a terrific read. Highly recommended!

Two Spears up!!
This was an excellent biography. It kept me up the last few nights reading late into the wee hours of the morning. These are the bio's that spearos will have a hard time putting down. It was a great balance between telling the life story of one of the pioneers of skindiving while mixing in enough action to whet your appetite and dream of the next time you'll be able to get back out on the water. Even non-spearos would enjoy this book. It's hard to believe that one man's life touched so many elements of history. I can only imagine what it must have been like to live a day through his eyes whether it's diving in Cuba, the Bahamas or just living the life.Well done Sheri!

King and his court
What a terrific account of a legendary family of watersportsmen (and a woman or two) in mid-century South Florida. It's packed with pictures and true stories. A great piece for your library, especially if you were lucky enough to know some members of the family.

Well written, a must read for any spearo
Art Pinder, The King Of Sling, is a fascinating, well written biography of a true spearfishing legend. Sheri Daye, a humble world class spearfisherman in her own right, does an excellent job distilling the amazing accomplishments of Art Pinder's life. Although the book focuses on Art, Sheri includes background and noteworthy slices of life of Art's father and two brothers. Sheri's writing style puts you on the deck and in the water with Art. She describes how Art rose to mainstream celebrity status as a spearfisherman 50 years ago. In addition to the incredible spearfishing accomplishments acieved by Art, Sheri also provides several stories of the countless lives saved by Art both as a lifeguard and as a seaman in the US Coastguard. The book weaves some spearfishing historical context into the chronology of Art Pinder's life. Some examples include: the state of dive and spearfishing equipment and its evolution; the huge variation in equipment and techniques between Florida and California spearfisherman in the 50s & 60s; and soceity's fascination with this strange, new, mysterious undersea sport. The King of Sling contains great photos of Art, his family, and friends, e.g. world record fish caught by Art and his brother, Art and his Father as Miami Beach Lifeguards, photos from a feature Sports Illustrated story on Art and his brothers. This book is full of humor. Sheri includes humor in and off the water. Some of it related to Art's celebrity status, as well as other humorous stories tied to his spearfishing antics. I often found myself laughing out loud while reading this book.Bottom line is this book tells an engaging story of a man who's combination of tremendous athletic prowess, love and passion for the undersea world, and humble family upbringing enabled him to achieve incredible feats still unsurpassed 50 year later. This is a must read for anyone who has ever dropped in the water with a pole-spear, speargun, or hawaiian sling; nonetheless, those who have never ventured into the sport of underwater hunting will also enjoy the fascinating and humorous life stories of Art Pinder.
