Excellent version of the Missa Solemnis.
Excellent Missa Solemnis version at a bargain price. It is difficult to better Karajan.

Like a good wine it needs to be savoured
Missa Solemnis is such a big and heavy Mass that |I would not have put Mozart's Coronation Mass along with it.Like a good wine it needs to be savoured ,the Coronation Mass needs to be listened to another time not to-gether.

Intense experience
This is one of Karajan's great recordings. It's not perfect as the choir is somewhat recessed and the some tempi are a little slow. But he makes this performance of Beethoven's great mass appear an intense spiritual experience, which is obviously what Beethoven was after. Ther soloists are probably the greatest team ever assembled for this (or any other?) choral work, with Janowitz absolutely stunning. Worth getting just to hear her; but the other three, including Wunderlich on one of his last recordings, are simply superb. For this work soloists must be out of the top drawer and these four certainly are. There are other, valid, ways of performing this work (eg Gardiner) but of its type this is unbeatable.
