I grew up a fan of Donald J. Sobol’s Encyclopedia Brown stories. I was hoping that the “Sherlock Puzzle Book” series would be an adult continuation of the high quality mysteries that Sobol wrote. I was greatly disappointed.Many of the stories were either extremely simplistic or did not reach a logical conclusion based on the facts presented in the case. Sometimes the facts given just don’t make sense and sometimes the answers given are actually wrong.For example in the very first case, “The Case of the Smoking Gun”, a policeman gives the facts of the mystery to Holmes and Watson. Watson is given four suspects and five names and is left to puzzle out which is the name of the murder victim – wouldn’t you just ask the police officer which is the name of the victim?Furthermore, one of the clues is “Edward, an excellent printer, was planning on teaching Joseph how to use the new lithograph”. The author says that this is a future event that will occur, but if he really intended to indicate a future event, he should have use “is” instead of “was”.“The Case of The Club Repairs” is a classic mathematical story problem – you remember, the kind you hated to do in school. The answer presented by the author is actually wrong. The correct factors for X are 24 and -20.The author gives a valid answer in the “The Case of The Card Game”, but there are two other answers that are equally valid based on the clues given that aren't mentioned.Did anyone proof read this book before publishing it? The errors in the book are frequent and obvious – starting in the “Table of Contents” which is useless because it doesn’t have any pages numbers. Half of the stories in the “Table of Contents” are titled “The Case of the . . .” with a lower case “t” and the other half are titled “The Case of The” with an upper case “T”.In “The Case of The Missing Child”, is the launderer’s name “Lucy” or “Lucky”. Both are used.So why two stars instead of just one? That’s because a few of the cases are actually pretty good (but only a few).

With an interest in Sherlock Holmes I bought this book. Each entry is a very short mystery to solve based on clues in the narrative of a page or two. Fascinating. You actually do not need to be a Holmes fan to enjoy this challenging book. Easy read.

These puzzles are engaging but challenging which is exactly what I was looking for. I’m using this book to help with my brain injury

I REALLY wanted to like this book, but it has numerous editing issues that make it impossible to solve the puzzle. Quite a few of the mysteries do not give us enough information; more than a few have very arbitrary solutions.

A great option for an avid reader.I love the set up of the book.You read the puzzle, try to figure it out & check the answer in the back.

Bought for 10 year old grandson who greatly admires Sherlock Holmes deductive reasoning skills. He absolutely loved this book so now I’m waiting for Volume 2 to buy for him.

Daughters loved solving the puzzles. Great book super fun. My 13 year old was better at it than my 10year old.

I just got this book and am cringing at the leaps of logic. For example, the first case indicates that it would be impossible for one person to murder another since they have only known each other for 6 months. Meanwhile I'm running rivalry motives through my head based on the information given, but in the end, it's thrown out the window due to some simplistic assumption. Perhaps if some of these logical rules, where this fantasy land exists, were defined in a preface somewhere I could get behind it. Anyway, very disappointing.
