well built and will last you longer than others.
i bought this to go on a 4 in phresh filter. i also bought an ipower 4 in inline pan at the same time. this one is still working as strong as they day i got it. the ipower is no longer working after 3 months of use. it also seems like this hurricane is more powerful even though it has a less cfm rating.i would recommend this fan over most others i have owned several inlines in my day. i think this one is one of the best. it runs nice last longer and even looks nicer than others. well built its a really nice fan.

High quality, reliable, and gets the job done
Purchased this to use with a Phresh Filter 701003 (200 CFM rated), as we wanted a higher-power/more efficacious alternative to standard residential air purifiers. For as-needed household use, the expected noise is more than offset by the rapid deodorizing this combination provides. Five to ten minutes of operation is sufficient to get rid of most common organic odors (e.g. garbage that should have been tossed the night before, cooking, pet accidents, etc.).The 4" fan + corresponding Phresh carbon filter combination is also small and lighweight enough to move around as needed-- although I put a cart together to make this a mobile solution for convenience; the included mounting brackets were quite handy for this.

Horrible
The Fan made this annoying buzzing sound. The noise was so loud and annoying that I was not able to fall asleep. And I was in another room!

High-quality but LOUD.
Smooth and powerful. Very loud. Too loud for home use, but in an industrial setting it would work great. Quality seems very high.

Works great, but is a little loud for only 171cfm.
Works very well, but is a bit loud. I ran it for about 9 months with no issues. I recently bought a HYPER Fan that is much quieter. I highly recommend buying a hyper fan that is about 2x or 3x the CFM you need, then using the speed controller that comes with it to turn it down. Night and day noise difference compared to this fan.

This fan sucks.... hot air out.
This fan was easy to install, looks good, feels sturdy and durable, has no noticable vibration when running, and moves a lot of air for a small grow tent. The sound isn't too bad, but i will definitly be using a fan speed controller.

No Customer Service Response
While I am pleased with the operation and quality of the fan, I am disappointed that two of my e-mails to the Hurricane folks have gone unanswered. My next purchase will be something else.Update: When asked on Amazon if the Hurricane 171 fan use a permanent-split capacitor motor or a capacitor-start induction motor (useful information to know if one desires to use a motor controller without damaging the motor and/or capacitor.), the Hydro Galaxy folks stated that "...the information was not available in the Specifications." The Specs came with the fan. I read them. The lack of information is why I asked my question. Is there a language barrier here?

Best fan for the money!
Bought this fan to replace a 3 week old 4" VenTech which sounded like it was made without any bearings in it. The new 4" Hurricane is absolutely the best for the money. It has a 5 year warranty vs. 90 days - 1 year on other brands of fans I looked at. I attached a 20 foot long dryer vent duct to the fan (5 ft. on the intake side and 15' on the exhaust side) and it is hardly noticeable when running at full speed, 24/7. Moves a lot of air, which is necessary in my small area, and removes the heat build up without a hitch. I highly recommend this fan to others who may have a second thought about the Hurricane brand of fans. When I contacted the company about the speed controller which they recommend, Titan Brand controllers, I was told by the customer service that this fan will also work well with almost any ACSC speed controller. I believe I made a really good purchase on this fan!

Air leaks around the edge, needs tape to seal
Air leaks around the fan and means it has to spin louder and faster to move the air. Taping around it seals it but also blocks the screws needed to mount it. For the cost, I wouldn't buy it until a rubber seal has been applied around it. It is a powerful fan if you need to move lots of air in 4".
