I LOVED this book! It was fascinating and eye-opening on so many levels. I especially liked how Martha Beck talks about whether things makes us feel "shackles on" or "shackles off" as well as differentiating between our socialized self, our inner lizard and our true self, which is our Starlight. She writes in an easy-to-read style that is filled with great story-telling, humor and truth.

This book came at a time in my life that is common to many people; the empty nest. After 35 years of working in Early Childhood Education, Foster Care and parenting, that era is closing. Now what to do? Martha Beck gave me hope once before in Expecting Adam, now in Steering by Starlight. So I am off to the adventure of finding my own way. Thanks, Martha.

I've only given four stars so far because I'm still working on the book. Martha's books can't just be read... they have to be digested. I'm finding so much timely and evolutionary material, it seems she wrote this book just for me because she knew I would need it just at this time.So I read some, then I do the exercises, then I put the book aside and absorb what I've read and learned, then when I'm ready to take it another step I come back to the book. When I find an issue that I can't completely agree with or assimilate, I spend time coming to understand why.This can be a life changing book, if you put in the time and effort to read and use it.

This is the seventh one of these I've bought for a friend. It is a must-read book for those trying to figure out life. I love the book and Martha Beck's humor and insight make it easier to go through what can be sometimes difficult exercises for people.

I love every one of her books.
