The Art of Illumination

I am a calligrapher and one of the things I have always wanted to do was to use illumination. I am presently working on a project and I believe by using illumination lettering would add the topping to the project. In the book the colors are vivid, the "how to" is really easy to understand, thus adding to the endless possibilites. My drawing is not so top notched :(, but I can draw the simple flowers, banners and vines that are shown in the book,and with that type of help, it would take my projects to an even higher level. Thank you Amazon for making this possible!!!

If you want to try illumination, this is the way to start. The author gives positive advice for beginners and explains how to use various tools. Once you have established yourself and have practiced, there is more to learn from this excellent book.The author has gone to the trouble of indicating how to use many different paints and pens and inks. There are many illustrations and all are most helpful. I am glad I purchased this book.

I bought this as a gift for a illumination craft person and she adores the book. Provides inspiration into the various letters used in manuscript illumination. Excellent resource for the reference library.

This one book contains materials usable for a beginner or for one more advanced in this art form. The instructions are clear & the illustrations great!

This book is very well done, an excellent instructional and reference book for those interested in trying illumination for the first time or looking for new and exciting ways to hone their craft. I highly recommend it as essential for your calligraphy library.

Great guide to start ilumination

Love, love, love that there is a color view of the border/designs and a line drawing as well as some instruction on how to create some of the designs.

I bought this book partly because it had so many positive reviews. I was pretty shocked when I got it because the book has been almost useless for me. Virtually none of the designs in this book are historically accurate or reference actual manuscripts, they seem to be 'inspired' by history instead. The aesthetic of almost every single illumination is the same - floral motifs with pastel colors that look like cheap designs off thrift store China plates. There isn't one page in this book that shows historical examples or attempts to recreate them, most of the designs look like 1800's Neoclassical interpretations of illumination. A lot of the designs are heavily inspired by French Books of Hours from the 15th century but none of the designs in the book are as delicate or impressive as the real deal. If you're looking for historical accuracy or a detailed guide for how to create illumination then you should definitely skip this book.

Patricia Carter has done it again. I have just acquired this latest book and I am so thrilled with the content. Even the cover makes you want to get started on some new projects! She has included just a few of her drawings from her previous books, but there are so many new ideas. I find the book so enjoyable to browse through, and I find it so unputdownable. There is so much inspiration to be gained from Mrs Carter's beautiful illustrations and clear instructions, from the simple to the truly sublime. If you are a budding calligraphist like me - buy the book - and you will love it.

I am attending a course on Calligraphy and bought this book for some new ideas on illumination. I was absolutely thrilled when I opened the book and have not been able to put in down since I bought it. It is a lovely book to keep looking through and there are so many ideas for borders, colours and some very unusual designs. I can't wait to put some of these into practice. I would truly recommend this book for anyone interested in calligraphy and the art of illumination.
