Typical Van Lustbader
This was a great follow-up book to Jian and just as good. You do not read his books of Japan and China in one day. His understanding of the cultures is amazing. These books are definitely not for everyone.

Kinda like Taipan
Easy reading, a bit much on the intercourse scene, but overall a good story. There is a happy ending which is always nice.

Good book
Again a fine book from one of my favorite authors. Once you get into the fine tale you want to know what is going to happen but you know you will have to bring patience to bear.

A nice read
It was a nice read. I like how the characters are intervened and have all kinds of political roles.I read the author's books when I was younger, so I was curious to see if they have the same effect on me now, and I'm satisfied. Maybe Jake Maroc is not my favorite character (I somehow liked Nikola Linear better), but he is still one of the strongest.

Complex book with simplistic ending
I bought this book because the first volume, Jian, was a wonderfully complex story with fascinating characters and I wanted to know what will happen to them. The volume two, Shan, repeated many of the background stories, as though it were an independent novel. The storyline became increasingly complex, hard to follow, introducing characters we didn't have any empathy for, and in the end, left the fate of principal characters dangling. Regaining the main character's (Jake's) daughter, as if returning from the dead, was hardly a satisfactory resolution to the illogical loss of his beloved Bliss. Why is a daughter a substitute for a life-partner? The sacrifice by Bliss made absolutely no sense at the end. Jake should have had it all...unless this book is like a No play...In any case, it felt like the Mr. Lustbader got tired and bored by the second volume, and just wrote scenes and events as fillers, to just get a certain number of pages done. What a pity, for he is a brilliant writer.
