If you shoot spring air pellet rifles, this is a must.
If you are using a spring air pellet rifle it is very important to shoot your pellet rifle with your hand under the fore-shock. You don't have to grasp the stock, just put your hand under the fore-shock to lift it up off the bag or a rifle rest. It is also not necessary to place your cheek pressed hard against the stock or to jam the stock hard into your shoulder or take a death grip on the pistol grip area for the trigger. If you try to keep your rifle from moving when you fire your rifle, you are actually making it jump a little. The best thing to get a tight group when firing the rifle is to have a light grip and trying to have no body part pressing or hindering the rifle movement when you fire. You may not believe me how well this works until you try it for yourself and if you do it right your groupings will get smaller. On the other hand, If you are using a Match rifle, you can place it on a rifle rest when firing, plus hold the stock, lay you cheek on the stock and place the Match rifle against your shoulder. The internals inside of a Match spring air rifle take care of recoil so you do not feel the recoil or barley feel the recoil. It all boils down to allowing your rifle to move slightly when firing just like a Match spring air rifle. This is why when I am shooting one of my spring air rifles using a rest, I lay the fore-stock into my open hand and don't try to impede the movement of the rifle when shooting. The main reason your groups are sometimes spreading out from what they are capable of shooting, is simply that the pellet is not moving out of the barrel fast enough to exit the barrel before it jumps or while it is jumping. This rule does not apply to cartridge rifles because, the bullet moves out of the barrel before the barrel jumps and that is because of the speed of the bullet. So with a cartridge rifle, you can more or less lock your position with your forehand, cheek, trigger grip and shoulder. One other factor if you are trying to get decent groups, use fairly good quality pellets. What I have said above about buying this rest, is because my fairly new pup decided he needed my leather rest as his new toy, so I had to buy a new one. I really like this rest because it has a big surface area for my open hand to rest on and cradle the fore-stock. I think this rest is real quality and very comfortable to use and I like it more than my old one and It works great, besides my pup loves his new toy.
