Understanding Earth

I'm a returning student on a geophysics path and this was required reading for one of my first year courses in geology.So first of all, let me boast up the merits of buying this book used. BECAUSE SOMEBODY ELSE HAS ALREADY DONE YOUR HIGHLIGHTING FOR YOU. I love my previous owner so much already. He literally underlined and highlighted all of the highest key information. I mean, you still need to READ everything (And if you love geology, this shouldn't be a problem and if you DON'T love geology, why are you studying geology?) but sections that are deeply underlined or highlighted help direct you to paragraphs of special import. Plus i HATE highlighting. I just like to read. So this was incredibly useful and bonus, this even more useful copy of the book is a fraction of the price.Now.. the content. This really is a very high high high level textbook. If you're looking for a deeper technical read, this isn't the book for you. I already had a firm grasp of all the material in this book, but it's required reading for my class so here we are.And that is hardly a commentary on the book itself. Or the seller. If anything, it's a commentary on the expectations of the professor and the department. I was disappointed that my assigned textbook wasn't detailed enough for my particular desires but the copy i got of that book was top freaking drawer.

Great introduction to geology at a college level.

I have some background in biological science and I have always wanted to find a way to get up to speed on geology because so much of evolutionary biology has reference to geology. I have gone through one textbook and numbers of Internet readings on geology. I can say that I learnt a great deal from these. Yet when I started to read this book 'Understanding Earth' a whole new understanding opens up before me. I like this book for its simple and comprehensive explanations and its coloured cross sectional representations which seem to transport me to be right there on the spot! I am halfway through the book and I have a great feeling that when I finish I will have then acquired a whole new discipline, not perhaps to the level of a graduate student but sufficient for me to base my biology on it.

I was looking for a comprehensive book on Geology that wasn't so technical I would have to go back to school to get through it. This book works admirably. It's technical, but not to the point of being obscure. For an in depth view of the Earth Sciences it is very good!

I purchased this book, Understanding Earth, for my Geology, Earth Systems class. The book has nice glossy pages and colorful pictures! 5th edition is just as good as 6th edition according to my professor, has the same number of pages, and is a lot cheaper. I was very happy to be able to purchase such an excellent used copy of this for such a very low price and receive it in the mail so fast. This was a perfect transaction! I ordered this for a class that I am taking online. I was looking for a used book and found one. The owner described the condition and it was true as he had stated. This book really helped with the test and I found it quite interesting.

Knowledgably and clearly written text with tons of graphic which make geology understandable and interesting.

Very similar to newer editions, the pages are just rearranged a little differently, but still have the same material there. The pictures and models are very helpful.

The book arrived quickly and was in perfect condition for second hand. The book is great for me, as I'm currently not an undergrad yet, but the concepts are clear and perfect for a headstart to a degree in geosciences.

the book was definitely and visibly second hand, but not torn. Some pages had corners slightly damaged or turned. We can see that it has been well-used. No real problem with that.
