Kill The Irishman [Blu-ray]

An honest portrayal
An accurate portrayal of conflicted motivation and the turmoil of a warrior conflicted within himself from a moral perspective. Gritty depiction of labor/management conflicts of the period and the futility of reasonable solutions when greed is the sole motivating dynamic. A Celtic warrior of honorable mettle in a criminal environment with far more credible delivery than Scorcese's latest entry in my opinion. Immersive and historically accurate unlike the "Irishman".

Excellent acting by Ray Stevenson-Exciting Plot
Based on true events the plot has plenty of action to keep the action junkie satisfied. IMO the acting overall was excellent. Italian mafia looked, sounded and acted like old line mafia, Ray Stevenson gave a very credible performance of an Irish thug who bucked the mafia and almost won. He is a big guy and proved it several times in the movie. Yet he showed his soft side with his last wife. I liked that he succeeded without a college degree by educating himself which in those days meant checking a book out at the library and actually reading it. A college degree is no guarantee of success. Desire, willingness to work hard and willingness to learn along with a good dose of smarts will often get further than the entitled college grad. The bomb scenes were pretty graphic but the plot was about the bombings during the mafia irish man war. Christopher Walken was also an added plus to this movie along with Val Kilmer.Enjoyed the movie from beginning to end. Not for the easily offended.

Not Engaging - See Donnie Brasco Instead (watch it again, rather than this movie)
You'd be better off watching "Donnie Brasco" for the 100th time than watching "Kill the Irishman" for the first time. Funny thing is, I'm not quite sure why this movie just doesn't work. The acting's not bad, but I just couldn't get into the story, and I lived in Cleveland when these events transpired!Part of it is that the characters are complete stereotypes. The tough longshoreman who's torn when ordered to kill a friend who has 10 children. His wife, who can't take it anymore and packs the kids into the station wagon and leaves. Yawn. No wonder this movie only grossed $1 million against a budget of $12 million. Just wish I'd read the old reviews before I bought this.

Irish Mob of Cleveland
Fairly accurate portrayal of life and culture in Cleveland during the 1970's. The Irish Mob, Cronism, Nepotism, civil corruption and the stubborn genius of Danny Green. If you liked the Wire you'll enjoy this, but it is based upon a true life story of Danny Green, his life as a Longshoreman and a Mobster. I came of age in Cleveland and remember when they blew him and his car up. There was lots of thugs and corruption among the unions and the mob back in the day. This movie portrays the times well and character are well thought out and developed.

Enjoyable movie, based on actual events
Good movie, although a few liberties were taken with the facts (as is generally done, unfortunately). Actor playing Danny was great, but he's considerably larger than the actual Danny, which gives a somewhat false impression of how tough this guy really was. Bonus feature is the documentary with interviews of those who were actually there when everything happened. Spoiler: Filmed in MI! Really!!! MI???!!! *WTF.* <disgusted emoticon here>

Lost interest
Putting Christopher Walken front and center on the image is false advertising. He got a few minutes of screen time. Perhaps he quit the gig once he discovered how poorly-written the script was. Viewers are apparently supposed to feel that they're getting insight into Irish culture, but characters incessantly saying "Ireland" and "Irish" between action scenes does not accomplish this. Do yourself a favor and watch a Kung Fu movie instead--which will deliver more violence without insulting your intelligence.

Awesome Grit With Amazing Story Shows Life Is Indeed Stranger Than Fiction At Times
Wow. Such a surprise here. Good acting. Check. Good directing. Check. Amazing story. Check. Kept me in suspense throughout and the character development was awesome. Truth is stranger than fiction quite often...and this supports that premise. So glad I gave this film a chance. Barely misses 5 stars in my book, but only because it barely misses perfection in the overall product. If you like gritty films with real characters and life is stranger than fiction storylines...well, don’t miss this one.

Good acting on the parts of all - excellent cast. Not the most riveting story but still entertaining
I read several reviews of the movie before watching it. None were brazing it to high heavens but none were panning it and saying it was bad.It is based on a true story of a very violent man but who demonstrated a surprising degree of humanity - albeit usually more off than on.The violence shown is believable and apropos what one would expect I suppose if one were in that world for real. The colors they filmed it in were too muted (deliberately) for my taste but overall I think it was well worth watching. It tells a story of a man who if he had taken a different path - one of honesty - would have been an incredibly formidable man for the side of righteousness - rather than on the side of crime.Perhaps, in his next lifetime he will come back and make it right.

Dull/boring
This is based on the true story of Cleveland Ohio Irish Americangangster, Danny Green. I saw a documentary on him on Youtubeand thought this movie would be half good, I was wrong...Although there is a good cast of actors here, the plotting andstory is very weak. It seems the director has watched Goodfellastoo many times, but this film is nowhere near as good as that one.Where as Goodfellas, tells a story that cover three decades, withstyle and panache, here we get dull and cheap looking sets, withdull acting.Watch and read the really story of Danny Green, as it is moreinteresting than this boring movie.

Danny Greene, "he was a different type of hoodlum”
This is a fascinating film about the Cleveland mob war of the mid 1970s and the power struggle between a ruthless gangster of Irish descent and the Italian mafia. It has an authentic 1970s feel confirmed by the excellent one hour documentary included on the disc which I recommend is watched prior to the movie. The documentary provides a valuable context to the film which projects a raw vibrancy effectively conveying the brutality associated with organised crime. I bought this film as part of an Amazon deal after reading generally positive reviews, and although not as polished as Goodfellas or Casino is still a valuable addition to the gangster genre. Ray Stevenson is excellent as Danny Greene, “a man you don’t meet every day”, a modern ‘Celtic warrior’, violent, uncompromising and fiercely protective of his neighbourhood. There is good support from many well-known actors but this is Danny’s story and therefore their roles are suitably limited.

Luck of the Irish.
An Irish orphan grows up on the mean streets of Cleveland, inevitably with few prospects he ends up working as an unskilled labourer, but with a keen mind and violent temperament it's not long before he gets machinations of grandeur. He soon begins to run the local union but his next step, in cracking the Mafia is unlikely to be as simple...It surprised me this one, it's based on the true exploits of Daniel Greene (who I'd never heard of!), an American~Irish villain and FBI informant, who it seems, was operating throughout the 60s and 70s in Ohio. Who along with his gang had a complete disregard and dislike of The Mafia, which lead to an ongoing blood feud and several contract killings over the years. The cast I really enjoyed, with a number of usual suspects, like Sorvino, Lo Bianco, Gunton, Davi and Walken etc etc delivering the high standards (albeit in often typecast roles) we've come to expect from them over the years. Sure Stevenson as the lead didn't play his role with as much charisma as you'd of liked, but he was after all playing a criminal, and on the whole, these parts are far too regularly glamourised anyway. D'onofrio was really good, with Vinnie Jones' oirish accent sounding a bit dodgy, but as always he looked the part, so I'll let him alone. Leaving us with Val Kilmer, who although didn't do a bad job, was most at home in the bar scene, and I just wish he would be given the role of a dying Elvis soon, so that he might finally lose some weight!Anyhoo, there's plenty of action, mostly in the form of car bombs shredding people or guns going off, and the violent story kept me interested throughout, meaning that if you like 70s period gangster films, true stories about underworld renegades, or for that matter, productions of Celtic interest, you will no doubt like this, a lot...The bog standard dvd contains a very interesting documentary on the real Daniel Greene, with lots of talking heads who were involved in the events at the time. Recommended4.25/5.

one of the best
A lot of people give this DVD bad reviews; I have watched it many times, via other means, so I decided to order the DVD: one of the best moves I made.Delivery quick, good quality, and a brilliant and entertaining film: far better than the Irishman film in my opinion.
