“From those to whom much is given much is expected”
This is the second Growing to Greatness book that features notables from the Pacific Northwest. This one spotlights Bill Gates. He was always a curious and preciouses child whose family reluctantly took him out of public school and enrolled him in the exclusive Lakeside School in Seattle. It was here under strict supervision and dress codes that he discovered the ASR33 Teletype that set his wheels in motion. The book with its wonderful and oft time whimsical illustrations follows Gates from his initial schooling in Seattle to Harvard where he continued to innovate with programming and coding, right back to Seattle with the formation of Microsoft. The point of this book being that Bill, along with his friend Paul Allen, met challenges head on and turned those challenges into history.Bill met and married Melissa and together they amassed a great fortune but he was never far removed from the influence of his mom and dad who instilled in him that “From those to whom much is given much is expected”. Bill announced plans to give away 95% of his wealth in his lifetime and challenged others that are wealthy to do the same.Although the book does not specifically mention the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation by name it does tell that he was searching for a plan to help children who were dying unnecessarily around the world from curable diseases like measles, malaria, polio and yellow fever. This story on Bill Gates life is very abbreviated but of excellent quality and sure to impress the audience of 5 to 10 year olds for which it is intended.

The inspiring story of someone who tries to solve difficult things
'Think Smart, Be Fearless: A Biography of Bill Gates' by Sharon Mentyka with illustrations by Vivien Mildenberger is a child-size biography of a man who isn't afraid to take on problems that seem unsolvable. When Bill Gates was born, his grandmother nicknamed him Trey. His family liked to play games and learn to compete. His mother taught him to be compassionate. His innate curiosity and the birth of computing were a perfect fit for someone who liked a challenge. His path to fame and the friends he made along the way are here as well as the start of the foundation he runs to this day.I really liked this kid friendly look at the life of Bill Gates. I really liked the way the illustrations around Bill would just be endless thoughts or computer code. His story is an inspiring one.I received a review copy of this ebook from Little Bigfoot, Sasquatch Books, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

Iconic American Story
Living in Seattle you would think that I know a lot about Bill Gates… but this enchanting book illuminates its subject in such an involving way that I can personally relate to the man, Bill Gates for the first time. I’m impressed how the reader is invited into his world, his childhood, his early career and then joins him into his quest of philanthropy. This is a wonderful journey story of invention, determination and then giving back… an important tale for youthful eyes. There’s the not-so-perfect Bill Gates, and the Bill that grows up still with some jagged edges, yet like many American icons makes a big leap in believing, and changes the world. The author and illustrator have chosen a subject that's important for young people today about technology and responsibility. This book is also a good jumping off place for the parents who feel that they have little foundation in the science of technology, the ethics, and about the role models of our times.Beautifully told, a great arc of youth to adulthood, and the story is so easy to understand considering a lot of people have trouble with technology as a subject.

Beautiful illustrations, flows really well
Love this illustrator he did an absolutely beautiful job! The text is written great. As an educator I’m so glad I’ll have this in my library. As far as reading level I would say 2nd grade or above. First graders may do okay as a read aloud towards the end of the year. I love how it talks about his young life and his curiosity. Great read!
