Eric Sloane Is to Americana What Julia Childs Was to Cooking
Another one of Eric Sloane's great historical narratives on the development of America with this book focusing on the seasonal nature of farming.Thankfully most of Sloane's books are available as reprints as anyone interested in learning about the American way of life, from 1650 to 1900, will find these books real treasures. The text is straight forward, very informative and shows a reverence for all aspects of American farming, craftsmanship, invention and "common sense". The book is illustrated with great sketches and shows the modern urbanite how the rural Americans survived, thrived and prospered.Any Sloane book is an essential part of a library for those individuals who are feed-up with the urban ratrace and are seeking a simpler, self-supporting, rewarding experience.

an extrememly interesting read
If you're interested in American history and historical customs, you will definitely enjoy this book. If, like me, you are a homesteader, this book is a must. Not only filled with interesting tidbits of information, there are drawings and descriptions that are worth the price alone. Also charts such as: "An early list of basic herbs," "seasons of the common cooking herbs," and "Herb dyes of the 1700s." "Recipes from early American Farm Days" include recipes for things like: farm beer, mead, colored fires for fireplaces, dyes, paints, medicinals, and such toothsome goodies as Love Feast Buns, Election Day Cake, Chestnut Pudding, and more.

This book is timeless, and the author does an excellent job in not only sharing "old-style" techniques but also the differences of thought, custom, and changing perceptions. He shows the intelligence of our ancestors in a time and place where technology had not dulled our primary senses, and shares many tidbits that other historical books skip. I'll be buying his other books as well!

Hey, It's Eric Sloane, what could be better?
The man is fantastic, he is not only an outstanding artist, the man can write. He makes you think, he talks of values, life, and gets you to REALLY think. He takes you on journeys, he shows you beauty, he's just plain GOOD. I love his books, you will too.

What to do When
In the old times in colonial America there were certain times to perform specific tasks. When to cut wood for firewood when to tap maple trees when to mow hay. All seasons had their tasks that needed to be performed. This book will help you to get er done.
