Expensive for what you get!
I like the history of this first person account of James and Dolly Madison written by one of their former slaves. But it is a very short story. It falls short of being a book.

Easy to Read
Not only is the historical content interesting, but its easy reading. This is a small book with large print. My eyes loved it.

Don't miss this gem of a book.
So, you know something @ the WAR OF 1812? How Dolly Madison saved that big portrait of George Washington? Didn't happen. Not by Dolly, anyway. How Daniel Webster had an enslaved "body servant?" Nope. This was the dude. Don't miss this gem of a book.

A wonderful piece of history.
As a Virginian with family who lived at this time near Montpelier this is a treasured brief account of a special gentleman's reminiscences. Appreciate it being made available for Kindle.

Brief but authentic
I was dithering about ordering a book called _A Slave in the White House_by Elizabeth Dowling Taylor, which is based on this diary, so I wanted to read the diary first. The diary is so compelling but much too short, so I’ve ordered Taylor’s book as well.

Short, Informative
Very short book about James Madison, written by his personal manservant. It was informative, although only insofar as Madison’s personal life.
