Great buy: supports everything (yes, MDISCs too), works everywhere and it's compact
Every once in a while a nice little thing comes in your way to make your life a little bit easier.:)I have purchased this burner for a very simple reason: I need to create a well organized and long lasting archive on MDISC of all my stuff (video, photos, data, previous backups, basically anything I have). To be totally honest I had my doubts about two main things: the OS compatibility of this thing AND, most importantly, its ability to deal with MDISCs.In short: it works everywhere, it burns and reads MDISC (I've used BDs).Let me elaborate on both points:* it works everywhere: the first thing I did was plug it in a MacBook Pro running macOS Sierra. It works like a charm and gets recognized as soon as a disc is present. You can burn your data discs directly from the Finder. Also, it works nicely on my FreeBSD box: using it with cdrutils is a piece of cake. This means that almost certainly it'll work with Linux too.* MDISC compatibility: my main use-case for this burner. Even though it's not clearly stated anywhere: YES, this thing DOES SUPPORT MDISCS. I've used it to burn few MDISCs (BD) and they were written perfectly at a 2x speed.I really cannot find anything wrong with this burner: it's compact, does its job nicely, it's quiet and works with every optical media I need. It might not be the fastest on the market but it certainly makes life a hell lot easier as no cable is needed: just plug the thing in a USB3 port (powered) and you're done. No cables, no power bricks, nothing. The included app for Mac (Toast Lite) is very limited indeed: you can basically just burn data discs and clone existing ones, nothing else as most of its features require you to buy either a Pro or Titanium license. But most likely you won't need it: there are so many choices...In short: great buy.

Plays well with my MacBook Pro
Works fine and seems fairly durable, it looks very "Mac-like" but isn't quite as nice as Apples' Superdrive. Purchased as a BluRay player for my MacBook Pro, it functions as advertised, actually any limitations I've noticed have to do with software and Apples lack of support for BluRay. Burns CDs fine as seems about as fast as the Superdrive. I like the slot loading and that it has the same footprint as the Apple drive. Quiet and doesn't vibrate a lot while it does its' thing. I really only use it to play BluRay so I can't comment on any other functions ( Burning BDs, etc. ) but it does that well, so Five Stars it is.

A Good Drive
I have had the Pioneer BDR-XS06 Blu-Ray drive for a week. It has performed very well with my MacBook Pro. Only one USB connection is required. No external power source is needed as it has a USB 3 plug. Be sure to plug it into a similar port on your computer. One cable is important to me. This means that there are less cables and bulk when I pack my laptop bag. It reads both Blu-Rays and DVDs without issues. I haven't tested the burner functionality as that wasn't my reason for buying the drive. I have been in the middle of backing up my DVDs and Blu-Rays for some time now. This drive is able to complete a DVD backup in about 2.5 hours. A Blu-Ray disc takes about 14-16 hours. But, it works and the results are exactly what I expect.Pros: External drive that is fully powered off of one USB port. Reads CD/DVD/Blu-Ray. Compact design that is easy to transport.

Nice basic drive
I am writing this to help answer some questions some may have.Yes this drive absolutely works on a mac. I have used it successfully many times now on mac mini/latest OS.No this does not have any mac software included. Bluray is not built into mac Os. You will need software to watch or rip etc. i have made mkvs with no issue.Yes this comes with a usb-3 to usb-c cable. But i use my own usb-c to usb-c cable with no issue. No other power cable is needed but you need usb-c port on your computer. I have used the included cable but i prefer usb-c as it delivers more power than 3.0.If you just want to be able to watch a movie, you need to buy software on mac. No other drive you will look for will come with any. Try a google search for blu ray player software for mac.It is fast and quiet. Plastic, looks metal. So far so good. I will update reliability as i use it. My past 2 drives were LG and they didn’t hold ip well.I am pleased so far. Shipping was insanely fast.

A great versatile drive!
I’m moving from an old Mac Pro with built in optical to a new iMac so I wanted an optical drive that looked nice and I like slot load. I use this for playing all media including Blu-Ray etc. Some have reported slower speeds when using handbrake etc... I plugged mine into a USB 3 port and did a comparison of speed between it and the internal optical drive and they tied (internal slightly faster by about 15 seconds on a 45 minute title). To me that’s good enough for a bus powered device. If you use USB 2 it may not be as fast but I didn’t experience any 2X speed handbrake speeds. It does have an app to access hidden features that I was able to install on Mac OS Mojave, however the app didn’t really seem to save the setting changes. I deleted it as the drive works perfectly for my needs as it is (the quiet mode is off with no way for change it). The drive is not loud and it according to the manual, quiet setting results in slower speeds so I would just leave it off.It does playback Blu-ray provided you have an app to watch the Blu-ray with. I have Mac BluRay player Pro and it works fine with it.I also have toast (comes with A lite version I didn’t need) with BkuRay plug In for burning Blu-Rays. You only need this or Final Cut (or preimer etc) on Mac If your going to burn BluRay Video discs. BluRay data discs are handled natively in the finder.I only gave it 4 stars on material as it looks metal and matches the Mac but it’s actually plastic. It doesn’t feel cheap, but it’s cheaper than aluminum. Its slightly more than other offerings, but Pioneer usually makes good stuff.
