SynopsisKevin Spacey, Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce star in this classic thriller directed by Curtis Hanson. In 1950s Los Angeles, Ed Exley (Pearce), Bud White (Crowe) and Jack Vincennes (Spacey) are three very different cops: Ed is ambitious and incorruptible, Bud takes pleasure in beating up wrong-doers, and Jack works as technical advisor to the television show 'Badge of Honour'. Ed earns the enmity of Bud and Jack when he testifies that they were involved in the beating of a group of Mexicans in police custody, but all three men become involved after a mass-murder takes place at the Nite Owl cafe. Initially, it seems that a group of drug addicts are responsible, but further investigation leads to evidence of blackmail, prostitution and a police cover-up. Kim Basinger won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The best film of all time
Still, in my opinion, the best film ever. Gripping and exciting every time and the characters are some of, if the, best written in film history. Was robbed of the best picture Oscar.

Timeless Classic!
When a film is referred to as being 'timeless', it has nothing to do with the quality of the special effects, or the length, or the company that made it (Disney seems to refer to every one of its movies as a 'classic' - really? Have you seen Cars 2?!). No, what it has to do with, is story, script, direction and performance. If you've got those things right, the movie will live forever. Look at the 1950's War of the Worlds or the Time Machine - sure the effects are a bit creaky, but boy, how much better are they than their modern remakes? Look at The Maltese Falcon, or The Third Man, yeah, they are black and white, but so what? Both of those films have story and style to burn. And so we come to LA Confidential. A movie that is set in the fifties, has the wonderful feel of a 1970's detective thriller, a great modern sheen, fantastic actors, a scorching script and assured direction. What more could you possibly want? This movie is already about 17 or 18 years old. The greatness of it is that it feels like it could have been made yesterday, or have been magically transported through a black-hole from the 1950's, it lives and breathes it so well. I could have written this review a long time ago, but I 've only obtained the Blu-Ray recently, and seeing it as crisp and clear and watching the superb special features (commentary, documentaries, etc), I just HAD to write this. Timeless, indeed.

Excellent movie, instant classic
I have always loved this movie, since the moment I went to see to the cinema to watch it, but I have never bought a DVD copy, although I have no idea why....finally I bought this special edition and I have to say that I am really happy, as I have remembered why this movie is on my favourite list.It has everything a good movie should have: a beautiful woman, with elegance and classic beauty, mystery, good cops, bad cops and some of them in the gray areas of life, you have movie stars, gossipmongers, corruption, drugs, sex, and scandal. Basically this movie is all that the Black Dalhia wanted to be but couldn't.Kim Basinger is excellent here, perfect in every scene she is in, but she is not the only one that shines here, the whole cast is fantastic, Russell Crowe was not as famous here as in Gladiator but his performance was brilliant, and Guy Pearce and the reas were just as good.Highly recommended and this DVD has lots of surprises, like the pilot of the series. Now, the language information: Languages (English, German, Spanish) and subtitles (English, Spanish, Danish, Estonian, Finnish, German, Norwegian, Swedish)

ALL STAR CAST
I really enjoyed this 132 min REGION B/2 DVD that had a good story line with a few twists and turns. Parents please be warned there is a lot of strong language, bloody violence, drugs visible, female breasts seen very briefly, with several photos of naked men and women having sex. A first class cast serves up a ravishing and thrilling tale of police corruption together with Hollywood glamour. In this film version of James Ellroy's novel three cops (Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce), a call girl (Kim Basinger), a mysterious millionaire (David Strathairn), a tabloid journalist (Danny De Vito), and the Chief of Detectives (James Cromwell) fuel a labyrinthine plot rife with mystery, ambition, romance and humor.

A modern film noir classic
A brilliant interpretation of hardboiled film noir which has aged really well. You could show it in cinemas today and it'd stand alongside any big-budget thriller.Showcases some fabulous performances from the ensemble cast: Russell Crowe is like a condensed ball of fury as brawler Bud, while Guy Pearce is satisfyingly smug as the career policeman with a point to prove. You do need to pay attention to keep up with the multiple strands of the investigation, although the overall storyline of insidious corruption, betrayal and exploitation is pretty straightforward. The script is solid-sterling-silver, and the wry dialogue delivered with polish by all the players.Has some stand-out action sequences, a couple of brutal fights, and one or two particularly tender moments between the intriguing lust-triangle of the lead actors. The tack-on ending feels like it was added to make it more upbeat, but it can be forgiven.Great entertainment.9/10

Terrific!
This was easily the best Hollywood movie of 1997, but got sunk by Titanic at the box office and the Oscars. Which was a bit ironic. But not one to hold a 13-year-old grudge, this Blu-Ray disc is the third - and by far the best - format I have this film in (Laserdisc and DVD being the others). It's generally agreed that the DVD version looked a bit dark and dowdy, but in Blu-Ray all that period detail and the sublime photography is allowed to bloom - you're there, with an A-Grade cast firing on all cylinders in a story that's blindingly well told. A great one for your new Blu-Ray collection.

L.A Confidential
This is probably one of the greatest cop/ noire type of movies I’ve seen in a while . The story keeps you drawn in the whole time , lots of big name actors in this film that many may know , such as Kevin Spacey , Russell Crowe , Guy Pearce , Kim Basinger and Danny DeVito . I would recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of cop movies or a fan of the video game L.A Noire as this is one of the films the drew many ideas from for the game for sure !!

Guilty of Brilliance on All Counts
One of the very best murder mysteries ever filmed. It's an enthralling journey through the back alleys and halls of power of post WWII Los Angeles where no one and nothing is quite what it seems. Intricate, exquisitely crafted, we follow a host of deliciously realized but unrelated characters whose stories tangle into a murderous mess. Kim Basinger won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, but the entire cast brought their A+ Game. Not one slouch in the bunch.Los Angeles before the smog is as beautiful as the picture post cards used to make it. Costumes and Art Direction are top notch. Special praise for the driving, hard bitten, score by Jerry Goldsmith, who wrote the music for about 20% of all the movies you've ever seen. Not to be missed.
