Review For a second she thinks she is dead. Then she opens her eyes and wishes she was. Synopsis 'For a second she thinks she is dead. Then she opens her eyes and wishes she was.' Gripping
It's a while since I've read a crime novel and even longer since I've read one that grabbed me from the 2nd page and kept me guessing to the end. There are enough twists in this to keep you in suspense and not guess all the outcomes - I hate a book where you can predict what will happen. The first novel under his own name, this book introdues the character of Jack King, retired FBI profiler. Retired because he has burnt out after 20 yrs seeking the Black River Killer, so he retires to Italy with his family, only eventually to be drawn back, by both the Italian and US police as the killings spread across two continents. It also has short chapters which alternate between the killer, the FBI and the Italian police - good for moving the story along at a fast pace.

spider-don't get caught in his web
I've read more serial killer thrillers than I care to remember, so these day's it takes a lot to make them stand out from the crowd. This debut from British writer Michael Morley is an exciting, fast paced read which I just didn't want to put down. Spider is the name that the killer calls himself, and throughout the book we are given plenty of insight into his state of mind and why he kills the women he chooses. Jack King is the man who hunted Spider for years without successfully catching him, spider was known to the police as the Black River Killer, named from the area in South Carolina where most of his brutal crimes were committed. The toll of trying and failing to catch Spider resulted in a mental breakdown for Jack, who then moved to Tuscany in Italy with his wife and small son, where they ran a hotel, but Jack is having nightmares still after three years of leaving the FBI.Then a young girl's body is found with all the hallmarks of the Black River Killer [Spider] in the country where Jack is trying to lead a new life and also over in America the grave of the first victim has been dug up and her remains left on view minus her head, which has been sent to the FBI for Jacks' attention. Is Americas most notorious serial killer killing again? His he killing on both continents? The hunt hots up when a video of a young woman tied naked to a table and obviously not far death is sent to a news channel in America, then the race is on to try and find her before it's too late. I won't tell you any more about the plot just buy the book you won't regret it. Michael Morley know's how to get into the mind of both the killer and hunter, the question being who is hunting who. Also at the back of the paperback I read is a very interesting interview with the writer and a piece about the sreial killer Dennis Nilsen who the author did a documentary on.

A Serial Quest
Twenty years is a long time for a serial killer to be still doing his thing, but the Spider is still at it, this time on a specific mission. The FBI's best profiler, Jack King, burned out trying to discover Spider's identity and capture him. As a result, he and his wife, Nancy, retire to buy and run an upscale hotel in Tuscany, Italy, in an effort to have Jack recuperate and attain a sense of normalcy.Unfortunately, a murder takes place in Italy with the same MO as "BRK," as Spider is dubbed. BRK stands for the Black River Killer, scene of his first murder 20 years before. Jack is induced by his friend and Italian counterpart profiler to consult, and he goes to Rome to assist. This leads to Jack's becoming more involved, especially when another gruesome event draws him back to the United States. This novel is filled with terrifying descriptions of some of the Spider's efforts, and is so carefully and intriguingly constructed that the reader is drawn deeply into the story. It is penetratingly written and moves forward in many unexpected ways. The author is hard at work at his next novel, Necropolis, which will be published next year. Recommended.

Spider
a fast pace make this a real page turner although why the main character's wife is too lazy to learn Italian even though she runs a guest house in Tuscany doesn't ring true. All the Italians conveniently speak good English throughout the story. The identity of Terry is a brilliant twist and all in all an excellent piece of writing.

couldn't put it down
Have to say the first few pages rocked me to my core, and scared me a bit, well quite a lot.I loved the changing between scene's kept me reading,20 years for a serial killer was some going, and jack then coming back to deal with it,so many twists and turns,i really thought at one point i had worked out who the killer was then 10 pages further on,knew i was wrong,a very fast paced thriller, read it,and try to put it down if you can,i doubt it.Mike it was excellent and so say my mum and sis,stu still has to read it.I so look forward to viper, your reviews on here are great well done Mike
