Good read for 1at novel
Just found this author. I enjoyed this book. For a 1at novel it is well written. Good character development. Looking forward to more from this author.☺

I'm onto the 10th book in the series now....that's an indication of how much I enjoyed this, the first of a series set in England's 'peak district' The fact I spent some very enjoyable weekends there when I lived in the UK certainly helps, but the environment that is the scene of this excellently written crime fiction really contributes to the narrative. I hope Stephen Booth keeps on writing.

Black Dog
Book arrived before expected, in excellent condition, as was stated by the seller. Had a paperback copy of this book but have been looking for a Hardback copy. I have read all of Stephen Booth's books, Black Dog being the first, and none disappoint. Well written crime books set in Derbyshire with the main characters continuing throughout all of his books, having said that you could start reading any of his books and still enjoy them. Now awaiting his new book to come out!

Disappointing and too slow!
I took this on holiday because it looked like it would be a good read and keep me interested. It started off quite promising, but I felt the whole thing was just too long and drawn out. I got fed up with it and just wanted to get to the end.The twist at the end was nothing special either........sorry Stephen!

Glum but classy
The biggest strength of this book is how much it sells life in Derbyshire. I didn't know much about this particular county before reading Black Dog but now I not only feel quite knowledgable about it I have half a desire to live there! The descriptive work in the text is very well written. As for the murder plot, its not particularly complex (for such a long text) but I suppose it does the job. It also stays well within the realms of believability; a big plus I guess. The jury's out as to the two main characters. The male, Cooper, is a little bit too farmhand-at-heart for my tastes. Fry is better, and I'm relieved she doesn't completely remain the hard faced bore she comes across as in the beginning. Chemistry between the two is often awkward, conversations stunted and forced. I hope this improves as the series progresses. Most of the other characters are excellent, Harry Dickinson being the highlight. I don't know if some of these minor players appear in the other books but in this one they do a good job of entertaining. Collectively they partake in any number of very dark scenes too. This is a surprisingly adult tale, certainly not for younger readers. On the whole, a decent read. It's a slow and plodding but satisfying when you get to the end. A good effort.
