His Creative peak!
His best album by a wide margin IMO. The previous albums had bigger commercial hits, but TAO is a complete package brilliantly executed. The musicianship and production are amazing. Repeated listens are the key. You need to take it in a few times to appreciate it. Songs like Written In Rock, Tao of Love, Stranger In The House and Standing on The Edge are absolute jems. As great as the music is, the lyrics may be the best part for some. It’s a very dark album lyrically due to the depression he was going through at the time. This is a perfect example of a “headphones” album.

Working Class Dog was fun, Success Hasn't Spoiled Me was very teen pop
This is pure techno Rick. I think back in the 1980s he was just experimenting with where he wanted to go musically. Working Class Dog was fun, Success Hasn't Spoiled Me was very teen pop, Living in Oz was rock, Tao was techno and then Rock of Life was his mature album. If you want some of the different phases of Rick then this is one you should have. Not what I would call an essential record amongst all the other records of the world in any way but a good one if you're into Rick's music.

"Written and Rock" and "State of the Heart" are classics
This is the first major steps in Rick's maturation as an artist. "State of the Heart" and "Written in Rock" remind us that this album will start to consider the complexity of relationships. "Written in Rock" really wasn't a hit at the time, but it's probably the best song he wrote in the 1980's.This album also begins Rick's exploration of eastern themes. He easily could have coasted as a pin-up soap opera star, but instead sought to create more meaningful music...as part of his own search for meaning in life, love, and loss. Even the obvious pop fare contains some thoughtful lyrics. "Dance This World Away" and "Walking on the Edge" both consider the perilous nature of the culture in the era of Reagan (growing income inequality, heightened nuclear fears, Iran-Contra, amidst the excesses of new wealth, etc).

Oldies and still goodies
This was always my favorite album, even though it was his last US release that went anywhere. The music has held up well over the years, for me at least. "Written in Rock" still has that angsty edge and "Dancing the World Away" still gets your feet moving. As a Buddhist, I find the title and the "Taoist" songs interesting now. Maybe that was what influenced me towards Buddhism in the first place--"Surrender..."
