Captain John Smith: A Foothold in the New World (Heroes of History)

My husband reads these books to our 8 year old son, we want him to appreciate history and not just rely on his school to do that for him. They always keep him in awe of what happened in the past, and he is always entertained.

I am an Iraq & Afghanistan Veteran. Also my Degree is in Military History. This book is awesome it talks about how John Smith becomes "Captain" John Smith. Fighting the Ottoman Empire in the Service of the Holy Roman Empire the man was a War Hero. He was also enslaved. A lot of people don't know that. This was a great book.

This is a must read!!! It is an amazing story of a courageous man!! We can all learn from him and his life!

Listened to this on our trip to Jamestown. Who wants to read a big fat college level book about anyone, anyway? This was so pleasant, and just enough facts that I really don't need to know any more. I did happen to be the smartest visitor at Jamestown that day with the best questions, thanks to the Benge folks.

This is a great read for anyone that loves adventure. John Smith sure had a life filled with adventure!

This is written more for younger teens. Pretty basic information, not really a historical or documentary book.

Here is what our 11 year old son said about this book."I definetly reccomend this book. It is very realistic, historacly accurate, and full of excitement! When you read this book you will feel like you are a character from the story. You will smell the salt air as The english settelers sail out over the ocean, You will feel the tension as John is about to be executed by indians, and you will see entire cities go up in flames. If you read this book you will not be sorry!"
