The League of Gentlemen [Blu-ray]

An excellent plot.
So far as I am concerned, any film which features Jack Hawkins, Nigel Patrick, Roger Livesey and Richard Attenborough in its cast is bound to be worth watching. Unsurprisingly it is a superb film with a very original plot brilliantly acted by the whole cast. Jack Hawkins is one of my favourite actors and I have a number of his films in my DVD/Blu-ray collection, including The Cruel Sea, The Long Arm and a number of others. The plot is very original and describes the recruitment of 7 ex-army officers who possess a particular skill required by the ex-colonel, played by Jack Hawkins, to rob a London bank and to get away with it. I won't give any details away but it is quite unique among crime films to be so plausible, well written, by Brian Forbes who also stars, and well acted by all. I can thoroughly recommend this film.

LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN BLURAY from NETWORK JAN 2020
this remains a favourite of mine since the original cinema showing in my youth. The BluRay is excellent picture (16.9 ratio), acceptable sound if not absolutely perfect all the time, very good subtitles - NOT mentioned here on the Amazon site! I haven't watched the extras. This is, I suppose, the British version of the likes of OCEAN'S 11" and other "heist" films of the time. Does it work? It certainly does for this horse! Not "sexy", not violent, but full of plot, tension, humour, and, yes, excitement. The cast id just right, giving some lesser known, but stalwart, character actors fine parts - including Norman Bird, Terry Alexander, David Lodge and the great Roger Livesy and Nigel Patrick. Led by "Colonel" Jack Hawkins, the plan to rob a bank is so unlikely to suceed that it almost - I say almost, spoils the film. Go with it, and enjoy a good honest British Caper/heist/thriller. I often find myself saying a film may appeal to an audience of "a certain age" and this is probably one of those, but it is a cracker!

A disc for completists.
A five star film but the worn soundtrack & missing frames detract from my enjoyment, if you have the DVD then the marginal improvement in picture quality is not an incentive to upgrade.

Brilliant Film
What's not to like in this film? One of the best bank job films of all time and it looks even better on Blu Ray. If only they could make films as good as this today - but then I am showing my age on that statement.

Marvellous !
This was one of my all-time favourites. Jack Hawkins, Nigel Patrick have never been bettered, and the pace and excitement of the plot are superbly captured. It is a true Classic, - the very best of British film=making - and they don't make 'em like this anymore.
