Great Stories
My 5 year old son loves these stories and they are a current favorite. Some of the stories are perplexing (due to language/dialect), but many of them are quite good. We haven’t completely gotten through the book yet, but these stories are not depressing and one had us laughing out loud. Some stories do mention slavery and I have been teaching my son about that history, so he was already somewhat familiar.

Fantastic book
Beautifully written. We homeschool and are doing a comprehensive course study about segregation and slavery. This book and the history surrounding it has been a wonderful edition. After reading The Story of Ruby Bridges and Pink and Say, the whimsical stories telling hard truths has been a welcome change of pace. Many people have probably heard the tales of Brere Rabbit, Fox, Bear and the like. Anyone interested in a wonderful telling in audiobook form should look for Danny Glover reading Brer Rabbit and the Wonderful Tar Baby.

Hmm
Not good for reading comprehension. The English is not proper. Ok read for family fun.

Imaginative and Beautiful Folktales
Wonderful book of folktales! The stories are so vivid and i love that they are from an African American perspective; our perspective is usually erased or skimmed over. Loved this so much! Can’t wait to read the stories to my granddaughter.

A MUST read for every child
I buy this book every time someone I know has a baby. It's a fantastic collection of traditional West African and African-American folktales. Any and every child should have a copy of this book on their shelf. Definitely a classic in children's literature.

GREAT BOOK
I had this book when I was a child. I may be dating myself but when I originally came into possession of this book it came with an audio cassette that featured James Earl Jones narrating some of the stories. The tape broke and I could never find a decent replacement until recently!!! Not only am I glad to have this book again, but I am beyond ecstatic that it came with an audio cd with said narrations. Great book, and great stories. God Rest Virginia Hamilton

And I flew with the people............
This is a classic book of American Black Folktales with stories that may enrich the youth. The author does an excellent job of relating the stories chosen for this publication. The many awards that this book has received, in my opinion, are well deserved. Books have a way of transporting the reader to another time or place, to captivate the reader to forget his or her surroundings and become one with the storyteller. This classic work fulfills this description.

I had this book as a kid and sad that I couldn't find my copy
I had this book as a kid and sad that I couldn't find my copy. I ordered it to use in my high school English classroom to give students a different perspective. My own children enjoyed the stories (except the spookie ones). A wonderful book of slave narratives.
