Amazing quality for the price
Cabochard by Gres is a venerable French perfume that was expensive in its heyday. Like all perfumes it was reformulated about twenty years ago to comply with new international regulations, but remains a wonderful, classic chypre fragrance whose scent and performance suggest a much more costly product. The bottle is very attractive and tasteful. The perfume is classy and stays that way all day without any distortion that cheap scents often develop over the hours worn. I don’t know how the whole package can be of such high quality at this low a price.Cabochard smells expensive and I love it. Though it was developed long ago, it’s no “granny” scent. At first spray sharp and somewhat astringent-smelling, it quickly dries down into a green, complex adult-oriented classic. You won’t smell sweet like flowers, candy or baked goods. Nobody around you will feel queasy or headachy from this. I use the Eau de Parfum strength rather than Eau de Toilette because I prefer a more persistent presence but both are lovely.

Sultry, Smoldering, Tough Yet Sophisticated.
This is a very intriguing fragrance. There's nothing sweet or girly about it. It's difficult to describe. Picture yourself sitting in a red leather armchair sipping a brandy, and your companion just lit a pipe. You notice warm scents of tobacco and perhaps a small vase of flowers in the distance. I wasn't sure if I'd like this perfume, but I'm so curious I had to try it. It is different for sure. There's something mysterious and earthy about it, not for the "pearl clutchers", not for the prim and proper, but perfect for those whose still waters run deep.

Scent is indeed personal ...
For years I've worn another Scent by the House of Gres, "Cabotine" but I wear that Spring/Summer Season for weekend "casual wear" around the House and alternate it with my expensive Fragrances. I was searching around for a bit heavier scent for the Fall to use in a similar fashion as the "Cabotine" (casual weekend wear around the House) and based on the descriptions of "Cabochard", decided to give it a try. It was so inexpensive I didn't feel it was a Scent I had to try on before purchasing so I ordered. When I opened the box I thought the bottle quite nice - heavy glass comfortable in the hand. Clean & simple appearance. However, when I gave it my first try, I waited until after the dry-down before I put my Nose to wrist but when I did found it extremely unappealing. I waited an hour or so and gave it another try hoping that my Nose was wrong the first try and that a light layering might enhance (or change) the scent. Nope.Personally, I thought this scent was one of the WORST fragrances I have ever put my Nose to! I will forgo long descriptive narratives but the bottom line with this particular fragrance was I thought it had the smell of the bottom of an ashtray! While some of the Reviews mentioned tobacco & even cigar, I have had some Perfumes with those particular Notes in them (Tobacco) so wasn't put off by the words. I don't even mind the scent of rich tobacco from a quality Cigar but that is not what I found in CABOCHARD. Extremely Acrid - a sharp chemical smell laden heavy with the scent of OLD ashes. I immediately tossed the bottle and didn't even try to use it for a Room Freshener as I have with other Perfumes that I don't prefer on my Skin but still enjoy the overall scent.Perfume is a very personal experience and there are many conditions that influence a persons like or dislike of a fragrance. A persons skin chemistry radically effects the aroma produced as well as other conditional elements where a scent can elicit emotional responses - either positive or negative. So my opinion is really just that, my opinion but I was a bit shocked just how "extremely awful" I thought this scent was - that in and of itself is a very first for me! Perhaps it was a bad batch? Perhaps. But this Fragrance is definitely not for me! But I found this scent SO unappealing I can't imagine it being good for anyone? but who knows? To each his own as they say and Cabochard is simply not mine!

I have used Cabochard scent for over 45 years....
I was first introduced to this sent in Paris when I bought the Perfume over 45 years ago. I have since used the oil, which they no longer make, & lately I get the Eau De Parfum. I like it since I can not smell it on myself but other people have always liked the sent on me or asked me what I am wearing & how nice it smells. I have used others but always go back to Cabochard. Still my Favorite...

Lovely But Different From EDT
I am a HUGE fan of the EDT and figured it was time to explore the EDP. I am so happy I finally picked this up. I still love the EDT, but they are quite distinct in their own way. The EDP is a lovely, slightly soapy, aldehyde, woody floral out of the bottle. It is not as intense or forward with smoke, tobacco and leather as the EDT. I would describe this as a more daytime chypre variant. It has better sillage than the EDT, but still not amazing longevity. I would have been thrilled if the EDP was as deep and intoxicating as the EDT, but I am not disappointed at all. The EDP is beautiful in its own rite and longer lasting. I love that the dry down gives way to rich and romantic notes of tobacco and leather. I still favor the EDT, but this is very enjoyable.

Enjoyable
I bought this not so much for public wear but for earthy scents that feel close to being outdoors in a temperate forest climate. So was looking for nature not sweets or flowers. I am very much enjoying it for it's earthy grounding. It's linear with a combination of BARK & dry grasses. I don't pick up much leather but it has a touch of it. Totally uni-sex with a touch more feminine with just a touch of white floral. There's a little sophistication to it, definitely swings towards evening formal in a noir 40s-60s movie kind of way. Wish it was stronger but it's definitely punchy.

Cabochard is not what I remembered.
I used this scent for many years in my youth. They have definitely changed the formula, because this perfume is nothing like I remembered. There is a very strong note of stale tobacco, very off putting. I don't know if it is because the perfume is old, or if that is the new scent. The bottle is a beautiful crystal, so I will display it on my dresser, but definitely not use the product!
