Longing ( Sehnsucht ) [DVD]

LONGING is the beautifully controlled debut of the director of WESTERN, Valeska Grisebach - a major talent by any standard. See it.

Set in a small rural community, with minimal dialogue and little outward expression of emotion, there's an almost Bruno Dumont (L'Humanité) feel to Valeska Grisebach's Sehnsucht in how passions and death are intertwined. Violence may not be as prominent here, but the sense of closeness to the land and an uprooting that occurs is just as profound and a sense of death remains present in the background. Opening with Markus, a metal worker on his rounds, trying to help a couple in a car accident who it subsequently transpires had attempted suicide together, the woman's death and the man's survival leads the young man to question his intervention and the incident clearly marks him deeply. His own world and marriage to Ella, is similarly driven off course when, on a conference with other firemen in the region - he's the emergency call-out for the local village - Markus meets and sleeps with a waitress Rose and thereafter finds himself torn between two women he loves dearly. A shocking accident however forces him to confront and deal with the matter.The filmmaking approach in Sehnsucht is direct and effective. It's a relatively simple story, but one that forces the viewer to put themselves in the heads of the characters, thereby raising interesting questions - questions that are directly discussed in the film's unusual epilogue. While it evokes the slow interiorised drama of some of the more challenging world cinema - Reygadas, Dumont and The Dardenne Bros. - Sehnsucht doesn't quite push boundaries in the same way, but this is a strong debut from Grisebach nonetheless.The German DVD has a lovely widescreen transfer, stereo soundtrack and optional English subtitles for the film. Extras include a photo gallery, a short news-item feature (unsubtitled) on the premiere of the film in Zühlen, the small town where the film is set, and the film's trailer.

Sehnsucht ist ein herzzerreißend schöner Film über Menschen, die uns umgeben, die wir meistens aber nicht sehen. Ihre Sorgen, ihre Nöte, ihre Wünsche und Träume werden so vorsichtig ausgepackt und so liebevoll dargestellt und miteinander verwoben, dass man sich freut dabei sein zu dürfen. So banal und so echt ist dieser Film, dass man nie aufhören will dieser Geschichte zu folgen.

Das Leben auf dem Land - in einem "neuen" Bundesland - oder: was bleibt. Sehr gute Laiendarsteller, starke Gefühle... und eine grosse Leere, die vielleicht alles aufsaugt. Eine Projektion von woanders her oder doch ein grosses Stück Wahrheit über die Verlierer der Einheit?

Eine packende Dreiecksgeschichte in Brandenburg mit unglaublich guten Laiendarstellern besetzt, die um ihr Leben spielen. Lange hat mich ein deutscher Film nicht mehr so berührt.

Der Film hat mich nun gar nicht erreicht. Zu statisch, nicht nachzuvollziehen, was den Hauptdarsteller bewegt, was ihn seine Entscheidungen so treffen lässt, wie er es letztlich tut. Bei mir kam da wenig an von dem, was die Regisseurin/Drehbuchautorin eigentlich beabsichtigt hatte. Schade.

Habe diese DVD wegen ueberwiegend positiver Rezensionen ausgesucht. Leider konnte der Film meinen hohen Erwartungsanspruechen nicht gerecht werden. Die Schauspieler mittelmaessig, die Story duerftig. Fazit: Eher enttaeuschend...

Geht_gar_nicht. Eine ziemlich schlechte Story mit recht 'kranken' Ideen vermischt, wir haben unseren Augen kaum getraut, einen solchen Film über good!movies verlegt, normalerweise ist dort der Name Programm :(
