I always lock mine, but I don't think doing so is absolutely necessary; however, you may want to if the bag will get a lot of tumbling around or movement while being carried. There are two zippers that zip to the center to close and lock. If kept unlocked, they might have a tendency to separate and your contents would spill out or become "fragrant".
