Spring or fall!
They’re so good! I planted last fall and got a really decent crop! About 90% germinated across all varieties. The goldens are always my favorite roasted and the detroits are amazing pickled. You won’t be disappointed by this pick. The flavor is awesome! All seeds produced the typical cluster. I actually do NOT pull the side plants - I leave one, sometimes two if they’re strong. For me, it seems only one actually matures and the others just don’t grow in the shadow of the main. I don’t end up with all of them growing and turn out small. The main beet can possibly be on the smaller side (not for all), BUT this means those other side ones that don’t grow can winter over in my area. I was shocked when all those babies survived the Virginia winter, so in mid February (yes, February) I transplanted them from where I left them in the fall into another raised garden I have for a rotation (those are the pics). I dug them up carefully and separated any doubles in a bucket of water. As long as the storage part of the root hasn’t really formed and the tap root stays in tact, the tiny plants will act just like seedlings - even though they’re months old - and pick right up where they left off. They’re actually not as delicate as I was led to believe long ago. Plus I got to plant them at the exact depth they needed so they didn’t shoulder out of the soil. This is the result! Super quick growing spring beets you can get two seasons out of - all ready for you - and you don’t have to waste seeds! Pretty sure this won’t work at all if you sprout in spring, but something to experiment with in fall. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose! And again, they’re such good flavor! You’re not at the mercy of whatever the grocery store has!

Happy sprouts
I just started the seeds about a week ago but every single seed has sprouted. I didn’t mark which were which but the stalk of the seedling shows whether they’re red or gold. But they seem happy!

Healthy and quick growth
I have not gotten to taste the beach yet but the plants came up nice and easy from seed. I have 225 foot rows of these beats coming up and they seem very healthy

Growing Great!
I grow these in the Southern California desert where it can get very hot and very cold at night. These beets are growing great and it is fun to try different varieties.
