Your Name Is a Song

A very cute book with a very important message
This is a great book for kids who have names other people struggle (or just don't even try) with, to increase their confidence to stand up for their names and teach others how to say it properly. This is also good for kids who have common names, to teach them that just because another person's name sounds different than what they're used to hearing, it's still a beautiful name and you should say it correctly. Honestly, I know a few adults who could use this book!I especially love that the author included a glossary of the names mentioned in the book, including their origins and meanings. All the names featured are so beautiful, it's lovely to have further education on them.

Great for my Music classroom!
I used this book in my Music classroom (grades 2-7) as part of a composition unit. We loved the book, the idea of our names coming from somewhere, having different feelings, having rhythm and melody. My students represent so many languages and cultures. This book honors each and every on of us. Great story, beautiful illustrations.

Magical and breathtaking book
Between the poetic writing and the breathtaking art, this book is one of our favorite books of all time. My children love hearing it, and have enjoyed learning how to pronounce some new-to-them name along with the author (there's a link listed in the back of the book that takes you to a video of her pronouncing each of the beautiful names in the book). A MUST HAVE for all families, teachers, and caregivers!

A beautiful message!
I love that this book encourages kids to be proud of their names, even though they may deviate from the "norm." It also encourages others to respect the pronunciation of unique names which I think is really important!

Absolutely Beautiful ❤️
This is the first children's book I've read that put tears in my eyes. We read this with our 3.5 year old, and he made the effort to pronounce each beautiful name along with us. I just kept thinking how he will likely have people mispronounce his name, his brother's, and how I've had mine...and how this book will help him appreciate how special each name is.Parents agonize over naming their babies, and nothing hurts more than having your child's beautiful name butchered or mocked. From those of us with non-anglo names and cultures, thank you!For those of you with Anglo names, this book is so important to add to your child's library!

This is a truly beautiful book. It is definitely one that every teacher should have in their collection. The illustrations are beautiful. The story and names are just wonderful. My principal showed me this big and I purchased it that day. If your looking for high quality, diverse books. This is it!

Joy to read aloud
I wish I could pack a copy of this book into every first grader with a less than usual name.First grader main character, referred to as "the girl", tells her mum that her name got stuck in her teacher's mouth on the first day of school. The mum tells the girl that she should sing her name, because names are songs. They go through an array of names in different languages as the girl practices saying the names and learn where they came from. The next day she comes ready to school to sing not only her name, but also the names of her teacher and classmates. The glossary at the end of the book provides further insight into the names mentioned in the book. The illustrations compliment the story perfectly.

Can only be read on a Mac..
I heard a lot about this book and thought it would be perfect for the new school year. Sadly it can only be read a mac - not on any kindle apps....just beware before you buy.
