Life Changing
I have the men's version, which is almost identical, in red at 54 cm. I am 175cm and now 63kg.This is my second carbon bike and I love it. Thanks to this and my first bicycle I am now back down to my high school weight at age 50 after loosing a couple of stone (15kg). I vastly prefer this carbon bike to the aluminium bike that I had before, because carbon flexes to iron out road surface irregularities making for a smooth ride. I think that perhaps the biggest advantage to the suspension provided by carbon is that it prevents their being a negative feedback to effort. When you pedal on an aluminium bike and go over road surface irregularities the effort that you put in pushes back at your crotch. Since the front forks and rear triangle of this bike flex then there is no disinsentive to putting putting out the watts. I did not lose much weight on my aluminum bike but I did on my carbon bikes. My carbon road bikes, including this Felt Z5, were for this reason utterly life changing.Components. My first bike had a Shimano Ultegra groupset, one grade up from this which has "105", and there is something about the way in which Ultegra groupsets change gear, the clunk, that is more precise and satisfying, or conversely I sometimes find myself having to press twice to change up to a harder gear on the big cog on this bike, but mainly the differences in the groupset are inconsequential to performance. My guess is that perhaps the Ultegra groupset will last longer. I have replaced the frame of my first carbon bike because I hit a garage roof and cracked the frame. I prefer the felt however and still ride it all the time. Even though I hit my bike on a garage roof, but for that the carbon frame was good for five years. So I think that this bike will last at least 5 years more like 10 though I may need to replace other parts including wheels. The stock wheels are not all that good. I swapped them for a slightly lighter, aero-spoked set of Mavik Aksiums.I am not sure how important it is that one purchase an expensive carbon bike. This one is not expensive. My first one had a higher recommended retail price. I could not tell the difference between them. Finally a point regarding fit. The bike has quite a relaxed, upright stance, when on the hoods as we generally are when we start. This means that you will be able to ride it if, like me, you have belly flab. However when you lose weight you may wish for a more "aggressive" (i.e. more horizontal, less upright) riding position. You can use the drops (the U) on this bike but even then you will not be able to get down al that low. The stem is adjustable so that you can vary the angle to one of 4 settings (two elevated, two declined). When you get really flexible however I recommend putting a long declined stem on this bike so that the bottom of the bars are about level with the tyres. I have a 150mm Trial bike stem at -30 degrees and it works very well for me. This set up (a bit like a TT position with road bike handlebars) also provides an incentive for maintaining weight loss since getting down horizontal is only possible when you have really shredded that belly. And riding in a horizontal position, which improves aerodynamics and makes going faster easier, is a reward for maintaining that belly size. Many sports are like this to an extent. If you enjoy running then if you get fat running gets difficult which is an incentive to run. But I find this road bike to be an especially good motivator due to the way it provides a way of going really really fast only if I am fit, which keeps me fit - a positive feedback loop. The only drawback of this product is that I bore friends and acquaintances recommending it to them which bores them senseless, or worse. That is why I recommending this bike here. It is smooth, fast and reliable. It could change your life too.
