Though black catechu and pale catechu differ somewhat chemically, they are used for the same purposes at the same dose. Non-standardized products may contain high amounts of aflatoxin, a metabolite of Aspergillus, which is toxic and may lead to certain cancers.
The applicable parts of acacia catechu are the leaf and stem. Active constituents include tannins, catechin, gambrine and fisetin.
