Great Product, But Buyer Beware
The product was easy to install, and it's very study, when it's closed properly. For those of us that can close it, it works great! Every now and then I have friends over that don't know how to close it properly, and both times a child went right through. If it's not properly hooked, a child can easily detach it and fall down the stairs.I have to do an in-service when new friends come over, and it works really well.

Retractable, but a pain to use. Bad QC
Overall, this gate is not that great and I would not recommend it unless you need it to fit in a tight space. It is a self-retracting gate that you pull out fabric-like material to close.Pros:Great for small spaces:Bought this gate to use at the bottom of stairs that end in a hallway. Love that it retracts so that it doesn't block the walkway when not in use.Lock works:When locked, the material doesn't pull out. The lock is quick and easy to use. To close, you just flip a latch down. To open, you push a button in while flipping the latch up.Adequate retraction:Been using this gate intermittently for a few months now, and it retracts without prooblems. Every so often it doesn't retract completely, leaving less than an inch loose, but with a little fiddling it always goes back in. The retraction feels strong.Cons:Inconvenient to use:Because the gate is soft, the handle to pull it shut is halfway down the thing (see pic), so you have to crouch down and drag it out at an awkward angle. Not great when you are carrying a baby. Our gate was made crooked, so this takes two hands. With swing baby gates, you can shut by feel, sometimes listen for a click to confirm. With this gate, you have to pay attention and watch carefully to make sure the hook has actually caught the metal bar before letting go. Again, not super easy with a baby.Bad quality control, gate received is not secure:The "hook" used to close the gate is a long piece of plastic that grabs a long metal bar (see pic). Ours was attached crooked, with about 1.25-1.5" difference between top and bottom. This makes the gate not only extra annoying and hard to close, but ineffective- there is enough slack (see pic) that you can begin to peel open the gate when it's closed! Had to 3D print new brackets to try and compensate for the crookedness. If the gate had been manufactured correctly, it would probably be able to withstand a kid trying to get through. Although the hook is plastic, it feels pretty solid. To address something other reviewers have noted, the material does have a faint pattern. It's difficult to see unless you look at the right angle, but it's there. You can just make it out in my photo showing the handle.

3 stars, wish I could give it 4 but. . .
I am really stuck between 3 and 4 stars. This gate definitely serves its purpose, but I wish it was better than this. We use this gate only for night time to hold back our toddler from unlocking our door and going outside. We do not use this throughout the day. I would imagine if we did it would be more irritating to use. The gate is loud like many others when retracting and closing the gate. It has never woken up our 2 yr old though! The locking mechanicism works well and does have a noticable "click" sound. I'm sure this would be a "one handed" operation if you really got the hang of it but many times I need to fix the bottom to grab onto the hooks with two hands. The dry wall anchors are also not the greatest. After a few days of use the dry wall anchors started coming out of our wall . . . Not safe! If you leaned on the gate with enough force the whole thing could have come crashing down. Installing the dry wall anchors in the studs would have made it more secure, but in an imperfect world you may be hard pressed to find studs that completely line up between two walls. So in that case we have extra reinforcements (better drywall anchors) on one side of the gate. From this review it sounds like I should have given this gate one star! But considering all the other "cheaper end" retractable gates out there, I think this one was a nice choice. And does seem strong (with the extra reinforcements). And doesn't look like a disgrace as you can "hide it away" during the day. Even though it is bulkier than some, I feel (even with a smaller hallway opening) that it doesn't take up too much space. If you are looking for a better quality gate, than this is not the gate to purchase. I've never owned one, but it seems the retract-a-gate which is more expensive has excellent reviews. You get what you pay for!

Sleek functional and easy to install
Sleek functional and easy to install. Can be opened and closed with one hand, the main unit has a flip switch which unlocks the screen (there is a button that must be pushed in simultaneously so a child couldnt flip it accidentally open). I did a bottom of stair install to keep my dogs downstairs, debating another one for top of stairs but there is a 3-4 finger gap that can be stretched out at the bottom while locked. For my install I bought two wooden boards from HD, stained them to match my stairs and zip tied them to the bannisters so I wouldn't have to drill into them. Dinged one star because the main unit rattles back and forth on the metal bracket that it slides onto to hold it in place.Update after a week: This may be better for just a top-of-stair installation. It is a little awkward reaching down to open it when coming down the stairs. As a compromise I relocated the pull-out handle to the top of the gate instead of the middle but since the top will then come out faster than the bottom, it makes it harder to pull out and clip on the other side. I also wish the resistance would be little lower to pull it out. Downgrading to 3 star.Update after a year: Fabric has frayed at the top where it's seeing the most wear and tear, it's not really impacting functionality but it's a little harder to retract all the way (the last inch where the wear is). However, opening resistance is much lower now - it's easy to open and close. It gets better with usage as we bought another one for the top of the stairs. After opening/closing it becomes muscle memory (there's a certain trick to it, that you just get used to), you seldom will run into situations where it's hard to latch. Bumping back up to 4 star.

Strong and easy to install
We used this product to keep our dogs away from the new baby in the house. It was easy to install - easy to use and very strong. It is a bigger construction than some other products but works perfectly for our purposes.

Looks beautiful - somewhat finiky to close
I really liked the gate but because of a few cons I only gave it a 3 star rating.First it looks really nice.Easy to assembleNice that its retracts out of the way.Cons: I found it somewhat of a cumbersome to attach the gate to close. You have to get it hooked on just right. Still for a retractable gate it was not that bad.

Installation is easy if you have no or thin floor moulding
Works well. Installation is easy if you have no or thin floor moulding. If it is a little thicker like mine was, you may need to add a shim behind the included spacers to add thickness enough so that the side bars drop beyond the moulding.
