My horse love getting his medicine!
This is a perfect vehicle for giving medications. My horse thinks he's getting a treat every morning. The instructions on the packaging does recommend that the product be above a certain temperature for the gel to be soft and pliable enough to hold a pill. I keep mine in the house, and find if I pop it in the microwave for 10 seconds, it's perfect and not to hot for my horse to eat. (he's kept closer to our house).I had a mini donkey on antibiotics for a week as well, (huge pills) and it held 2 at a time. He ate them fine.

Unusable they were so dried out
I'm so disappointed! I bought my first tub of these back in April and they were wonderful. The center was soft and full - perfect for hiding my horse's Prascend pill. However, when my second tub came, they were completely dried out and crumbly and the center was nearly empty. What little was there, was hard as a rock. Because the first tub was so great I figured this was just a fluke so I put in for a return and had a replacement tub sent out. Nope - same exact dried out, crumbling, empty pill pockets. They are truly so dry they are completely unusable. Back to Amazon this second batch goes but I'll be looking for a different product now. Fool me once, shame on me.... fool me twice? No thanks!

Fantastic
My 29 yr old horse is on numerous medications. This product allows me to secure his meds in an alfalfa cube, thus making sure he gets them. So glad I found this product.

Horse Got Suspicious
I love Standlee products and these have potential especially for horses who cannot have too much sugar in their diet. However, the pills don't stay in the carrier very well, as some of the carriers pieces have very little of the cranberry jelly inside. My horse ate these readily at first, then got suspicious and spit them out. The are very dry and I don't want to have to spend more time fussing around and rehydrating these or adding something additional to stuff inside the carrier to make it work. Also tried various other soft treats as pill carriers and horse also got wise to them. Have found it cheaper and have had 100% success by cutting up a carrot into chunks, cutting a slit in one of the larger chunks and wedging the pill in there. Then I mix up feeding the various chunks of cut-up carrot so that the horse never knows which one will have the pill inside. Not all horses like carrots nor may be able to have them if they have IR issues, but for those who love carrots and can handle a little sugar from one carrot a day, it has worked every time!

The center paste is supposed to be soft and it’s all dried up so it’s useless
The whole point of these horse pill carriers is that it’s supposed to have a soft pasty center so you can push the pill down into the paste and the horses don’t know that the pill is there! well of the ones that I have looked at in my 2 pound container every single one of them is so dried up that a pill can’t even get pushed into it! So it’s useless to me if I can’t use it as a pill carrier which is how it’s being marketed! I can buy horse treats a heck of a lot cheaper than the $60 I paid for this 2 pound tub of dried up paste!!

good for medicating picky horses
I have a mare with PPID, for which she takes Pergolide®. I used to just put the pills in her feed, and she'd eat them. However, her appetite started to fall off and she frequently didn't finish her feed and also missed her pills, which further decreased her appetite, and on and on. I remembered that I once used the Standlee pill carriers for another horse, so I tried them for my mare. She started getting her medication again and is doing much better. My only complaint is the "pill carrying center" of this product is hard and dried out. Can't really push the pills into the center, so the pills just sit there. I am afraid that they might fall out (they haven't yet). Don't know if Standlee changed the formulation or if the product I received was old and dried out. Hence not 5 stars. P.S. Since the centers contain cranberries, I bought a bag of "Craisins." Put the pill in the center of the Standlee pill carrier, squash in a Craisin to hold the pill in, and voila, the pill is safely contained in the pill carrier. Easy, peasy. I don't have to worry about my horse getting her daily medications!
