Ruined chilli
Beware of this kit. I bought a two pack and was excited to make my chilli, as I had used this pack before. But these must have been really old and expired. The beans would not soak in any water at all! Unfortunately, i jumped the gun and added them. Had to thrown the entire pot in the garbage. The beans were like rocks! Such a waste!

Makes a LOT
This bag makes a LOT of chili ! Great taste and pretty simple to fix. It is a little time consuming with having to pre soak then boil the beans, if you don't beans will NOT get soft ! FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS completely !!!

Review for Texas chili fans...
...you can use this, but you will need to modify the recipe. I'm Texan and not a particularly good cook but nonetheless volunteered to bring "Texas chili" to an office potluck. Luckily, I bought the two pack of this and did a test batch. Texans do not add beans to chili, so I skipped that step. I also substituted beer for the water and omitted the habanero (I'm no longer in Texas). Oh boy, was the result disappointing. It tasted like canned spaghetti sauce, and not a particularly good one. I couldn't taste the chili seasonings at all. For the office batch, I reduced the tomato ingredients to one 10oz can of ro-tel with chilis and one 10oz can of tomato paste. It was still plenty "tomatoey," but far better. I definitely will never, ever use canned stewed tomatoes in a chili recipe again. Ick. If you want to make Texas chili, it is better to find a Texas chili recipe online. That being said, the product is clearly marketed as a southwest product with beans and a tomato-based recipe, so I can't fault it for that. It is also packaged very well and would make a great gift for people who like spaghetti-flavored chili (that's a joke - don't hate).

BEST CHILI
Anyone looking for a great chili that is easy to make and totally adjustable heat wise should buy this Chili mix. I got my first bag as a gift and after throwing it together and tasting it went right online with Amazon to try and track down more product so I could share it with my friends and family. The mix comes with beans, habanero powder, chili powder and a flour thickener. All you add is the ground beef, and some tomato paste, a few herbs and cook. Be careful how much habanero powder you add to the chili, this stuff is hot! For my first batch I only used a quarter of the small packet of habanero powder and it was enough for me. . .there is lot's more for those of you who like the four alarm taste! This recipe makes about 1 gallon and four of us finished it in two sittings.BEST CHILI!

From mild to wild.
I first tried Ass Kickin Chili Fixins about 20 years ago. It is the best chili kit I've run across and I've tried a lot of them. Following the instructions it makes over a gallon of really tasty chili. It is nice that you can adjust the heat level by adjusting the amount of the habanero powder you use. You can also make the chili thicker with the included Masa flour but I don't bother with it. (Both come in packets separate from the main seasoning.) I've even occasionally split a batch and made some hot and some for the less adventurous eaters. Granted it's not cheap for what amounts to a pound of dried beans and some seasonings and you still have to buy all the rest of the ingredients. In the end you are really making a chili from scratch using their recipe which requires soaking the beans overnight and a couple of hours of dicing and stirring but the results are well worth it.The printed muslin bag is fun and I've been giving these Fixins as gifts for years.

This stuff kicks ass
This is really awesome chili. Preperation time is kinda long. But, of course, anything that turns out this great is worth waiting for. It's very important that you soak the beans overnight, occasionaly changing the water and removing any foreign materials (floaties). I alter the recipe slightly by adding some fresh sarrano peppers, sliced and sauted along with the onion and garlic. Also, I substitute two of the four cans of stewed tomatoes, using instead two cans of diced tomatoes, one w/green chilis, the other w/habeneros. And, I like my chili HOT so I shake-in a generous amount of "ASS KICKIN' Hot Sauce". Once all ingredients are mixed together, I find it best to allow the chili to simmer over low heat for at least 3 hours, usually 4 or 5. The longer the better. I've got family and friends that beg for me to make this chili. Somehow, after eating this stuff, you get this feeling of elation and calm, peace. It really makes you feel good. However, those who don't LOVE hot spicy chili should not even try one bite as they WILL suffer.
