The Glenstal Book of Prayer: A Benedictine Prayer Book

Every Tuesday evening I say evening prayer @ 6:30 pm (8:30 pm CST) to commemorate the death of Sue my older sister who died onSeptember 10th. 2019. Her twin Carmen prays in communion with myself and my brother Peter. I gifted a copy of Glenstal to each of them.

I've started praying from it since it arrived 3 days ago. I think it's a lovely addition to my library. It's a small book, and I think it includes quite a bit for its size. Excellent prayerbook. I love this version with the prayer selections particularly in Gaelic. It’s not a perfect collection (no Regina Coeli) but it’s overall what I was after. As a traditional Catholic, I appreciate the original Rosary mysteries.

I've been using Glenstal's Book of Prayer now for several years. Though I miss many days out of neglect, everytime I return, it is like sitting down with a dear, gentle friend who once again help leads me closer to God. The monks have selected out short but beautiful selections of daily readings from the Psalms and other passages of Scripture. What is of greatest help is a short, but gracious guide to morning/evening prayer, what is known as "liturgy of the hours" or the "divine office". We who do not live within the walls of a monastery truly can practice something of monastic grace through such great resources as this book. For more ideas of how to live out monastic principles within your daily life in the home, especially for those raising children or involved in the life of children, look into THE BUSY FAMILY'S GUIDE TO SPIRITUALITY, by David Robinson (Crossroad, 2009).  The Busy Family's Guide to Spirituality: Practical Lessons for Modern Living From the Monastic Tradition

This is a wonderful book, I bought a print copy years ago and was pleased to see it offered as a Kindle e-book. The prayers are beautiful!

I use the book for my noon time prayer and quite often for compline. A great supplement in addition to my monastery's book of psalms.

While the Luminous mysteries of the Rosary are not included, this prayer book offers a great deal. iI can provide a systematic guide for organizing one's prayer life in a very effective pattern. It can most certainly expand one's spiritual awareness very effectively.

If you have never prayed formal vocal prayer before this would probably be a good place to start. However, it was not what I was looking for. I have prayed Christian Prayer off and on for years. I work a full time job, teach a variety of classes on the Catholic faith which are then edited and distributed as cds. In addition to that I have my family obligations with a wife, three children and ten grandchildren. Like most people in today's world, I am busy, and as a result, there are times my prayer life suffers. I was looking for a true Shorter Christian Prayer; an abbreviated version of the Liturgy of the Hours. However, I would also like one that incorporates more beautiful language than does Christian Prayer. This book does not do that. The language is similar to Christian Prayer, it has one Psalm for each of the three major hours, which I liked, but it also incorporated some additional prayers which I felt detracted from the book and its purpose. It all depends on what you are looking for.

I LOVE IT AND IT IS SO FULL OF BENEDICTINE WISDOM AND INSIGHTS. VERY FULL AND A BEAUTIFUL BOOK MOST DEFINITELY NOT USED BEFORE, BUT IT IS NOW AND I USE IT ALL THE TIME AND IT HAS THE DAILY SAINTS AT THE BACK. I AM TYPING IT UP FOR MY FRIEND IN MANCHESTER AND ALSO RECORDING IT. IT IS A SPIRITUALLY BEAUTIFUL PRAYER BOOK

I have a hard copy which I prefer and use daily, I got this kindle version for convenience when travelling or reading during the night

This book is full of all the traditional prayers and inspiring psalms. It enables me to brush up on my prayer life.
