Buyer beware: fun to cook with but won't last
Great in theory and looked authentic. Fun for the family cooking with it! Thought it was going to be well made and last since it comes out of Japan. BUT, after only one use the Japanese characters (printed on paper not inked on permanent) peeled off and the corner of the grill chipped off. Would love to recommend but now I just feel obligated to warn potential buyers!

Tactile impressions - unboxing
The grill is very shallow inside - do NOT buy this as a crib for baby kiwis!!!Only one layer of Thaan charcoal will fit and it will be nearly touching the grate. I wanted at least an inch of vertical distance between the food and the coals, but nevermind. However, the thick bottom is there to insulate from the table. The material of the block is fascinating. Can you imagine that it comes from phytoplankton that produces half of the world’s oxygen? I find it amazing to come into contact with such a useful part of our planet. The plankton is neither a plant nor a fungus nor an animal nor a bacterium and it is called diatom, as in “two halves”. And then the feel of it - like a super-light version of natural chalk. It even leaves a chalky dust on fingers upon contact. At least when new, it has a chalky iodine smell of the oceans. Just like crushed ocean pearls, if you share that past time with me lol. It also has a very light rose pink colour. The block is feather-light and seems very brittle. Learning from other reviews, it is also pervasively porous. The super low density of the clay made me realize how this material enhances cooking. Rather than having a high thermal inertia as a denser material would have, the diatomaceous clay is instead an insulating material. Rather than absorb and re-emit heat, it will reflect it onto the grate. Unlike a ceramic grill, all heat comes directly from the coals, but the outer surface remains cool to touch. That allows for a comfortable social gathering around this tool but it also limits the cooking surface to whatever is above the hole (the side walls won’t help cook meat directly above them). Many reviewers complained that the decorations are printed. Not a problem! It’s easy to peel off before first use and then you can use this somewhere else! I’m also engaging the household to paint our own message to entertaining whatever animal is on the grate 😆🤦I can’t wait to try this grill on thin slices of short rib, wagyu rib eye, shrimp skewers or its intended application - chicken!

Great grill, get what you pay for.
This is an excellent little grill. It comes with a grill plate, a wooden base and little vent holes on the sides. Holds & retains heat from charcoal VERY well. Because of that, it cooks evenly. Instead of the pricey Japanese binchotan ($60/5lbs), we went with a budget Thai log charcoal, which provided great flavors and high heat as well. Great for 2-4 people. Depending on the size of your skewers/what you're grilling, it only took 2 to 3 mins per side. We enjoyed each other's company & went through about 30 skewers in about 2 hrs. Surface area can hold about 4-6 skewers, again, depending on the sizes of your items. Cleaning is almost none. Other than the grill plate that needs scrubbing, you can just dump out the ashes of and wipe it down. Overall, other than it being pricey for its small footprint, I'm very happy with this grill. Looking forward to using it again.

Tabletop safe!
Although on the small side this is a great robata-style grill. It is lightweight and is safe to use on a tabletop as it only gets slightly warm to the touch.

Beautiful grill, perfect for the purpose
This thing is perfect for use as a tabletop grill for Japanese/robata style cooking. For best results, use high grade authentic binchotan charcoal, nothing beats it for clean Long burning

Good Grill for a nice relaxing cooking.
First of all, this isn’t the same grill that people are buying from world market; a simple glance at side hole placement and how the grill grate is placed would tell you the difference. Now, this is definitely more for grilling pieces of meat for 1-2 people. I haven’t tried making yakitori, but I’m sure you can make some smaller ones on it. I’ve only grill small bite size cuts of meat on it and it works great for a nice relaxing night of eating good meat outside in cool weather. Although I do wish the cooking area was just a tad bigger.Cleaning wise, DO NOT let this thing touch water as it will fall apart like all the world market knockoffs that people said broke after trying to wash it in the sink... After letting the grill cool, it is recommended to wipe it with a wringed paper towel (you should not be able to squeeze water out this) and wipe it; however I find that to only smear stains, so I opted to just let the high heat of the coals kill the germs for me. I just take the time to clean the grate. For storage, I would suggest to bring the grill indoors and store in a dry place after You dump out the coals and let it cool. This is just to avoid having it absorb moisture from the air and break down; this is especially important if you live in a place with high humidity. The price seem mind boggling, but the thing is professionally hand crafted/carved out of DE and quite frankly I would rather pay the tag for a quality non toxic DE grill versus any potentially cancerous lookalike that’s cheaper.

Fun to use
We encountered this type of grill during a recent trip to Japan. It was fun to use and we wanted one for our home, maybe two. We ordered this one and received it well packaged. The quality of the grill is excellent
