Star Wars Legends Epic Collection 1: Rise of the Sith (Epic Collection: Star Wars)

Aside from one story about why Jedi don't fall in love that was non-canonical back when it was made, hopefully, I like this trade. The trade arrived with a bent cover, but that is the fault of the shipping and handling. I have seen a lot of negative reviews of this trade and while some of the stories are not the best, I still appreciate them as tales of the old days of Star Wars comics compared to today where pretty much all of the stories we have from Marvel are in the Empire/Rebellion era. I do think this is worth your time to read.

I am loving all of these legends reprints. I really hope they keep releasing these.

The art is OK and the stories are good, but mostly I just enjoyed reading about what the other Jedi are up to before Episode 1. There are arcs here about Mace Windu, Yaddle, Ki Adi Mundi, Qui Gon Jinn & Obi Wan Kenobi, Plo Koon, Darth Maul, and many others. There are some smaller cameos by Jedi in other Legends collections and a few other interesting tidbits (i.e. why is Mace's lightsaber purple and how Maul decided to use a lightsaber staff) that Star Wars fans will love that make reading this volume worth your time. The stories are all connected and flow into each other very well. It's well curated and reads like a long TPB.

I really enjoy these collections of the Star Wars Legends comics. They are beautifully curated in an approximate chronological order, and they're very easy to follow. They almost read like a complete story, even though they are more like Omnibuses.

Some of these stories are tremendous, . Others are so so, the artwork not tremendous, the stories only ok. The final set, acts of war is the cream of this collection.

In Rise of the Sith, we are first introduced to Mace Windy in Star Wars Tales #13 in a few short stories about his past and childhood. From there we get a story about Yaddle in Star Wars Tales #5. It then jumps to Star Wars #4-6 "Vow of Justice, Parts 1-3" with Ki-Adi Mundi. Qui-Gon Jinn takes the stage in Star Wars: Jedi - The Dark Side in his early days before Obi-Wan was his Padawan. Qui-Gon's diplomatic skills are utilized to stop a civil war; but things become complicated when another former Jedi is involved! Star Wars Tales #14 has Qui-Gon telling a young Obi-Wan a parable. Star Wars Tales #1 has Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in a foreign planet encountering the local creatures and learned about the balance of the force.Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan star in the Aurorient Express #1-2 as they try to rescue a sinking ship and figure out who the culprits are! Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan: Last Stand On Ord Mantell #1-3 has the duo tracking a lost child of a Baroness and discovers a mind control plot in the process!Tales #10 involves Darth Maul and the creation of his double-bladed lightsaber and Tales #14 shows how Darth Sidious works and plays on Darth Maul's fears for his training.We are then treated to Star Wars: Jedi Council - Acts of War #1-4 which follow Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to The Yinchorri homeworld along with other Council members to locate a secret military base! Star Wars Tales #3 follows with a story about Villie! The book finishes with some funny shorts from Star Wars Tales #7, 9, and 4!Overall we get a very mixed set of stories that just happen to focus on Obi and Qui-Gon primarily. The stories range from decent to really good but nothing that truly stands out. The Tales issues also tend to throw off the serious mood quite a bit.This isn't the best Legends collection but it has some important timeline tidbits thrown in so it's not all wasted time.

These Epic Collections of Star Wars are simply amazing to be able to collect. Having always been a big fan of Qui-gon Jin is was fantastic to be able to read a story on a younger version of him. Mace, another favorite, also gets a story collected within.
