As a series of earthquakes start tearing apart Los Angeles, scientist Emily theorizes that it's all building to a super quake that will drop the entire city into a lava-filled chasm. Engineer Jackwhose company is responsible for the quakes due to their deep frackingfeels obligated to help, and races with Emily through the ruined city with the hopes of diverting the epicenter to a less populated area and potentially save millions of lives.

Campy, but watchable.
This is definitely one of those "don't overthink it" movies. That said, not the disaster of a film I was expecting. The title is a bit misleading as the "big one" that it implies never shows up. Honestly while the movie is not a comedy, the small amounts of comedy in the movie are one of the things that work best. On the flip side some of the dramatic moments really don't work, and come across as humorous when they are meant to be serious. Not really what I would call high cinema, but a decent enough movie to watch if you have some time to kill. Just don't expect more from it than it can deliver. The characters are pretty two-dimensional. For most of them you get little to no sense what kind of people they would be outside the context of the movie. Aside from its sprinkling of comedy the pacing is done very well making for an efficient watch. In the end, 3/5. Not great enough to make me want to sing its praises. Not so bad that I feel the need to hang a warning label on it.

A bit silly at times
A suspense/drama with comedic undertones… I expected something with a bit more structure but this movie just didn’t fulfill my expectations. It ended with several things unanswered and unfulfilled.

Stupid and funny
I expected to see a low quality special effects movie with silly science, but I wasn't expecting a comedy. There was a lot of dry wit. The USGS building only had two employees due to budget cuts. When the ceiling collapsed during one of the minor quakes and the person there didn't answer his phone, the person said he was probably buried in paperwork. Reference to a shark hurricane as predicted by the one wacko scientist. And when they said to set off a quake that would destroy Long Beech, they said who's going to miss it? The scene with the teens in the vehicle at the destroyed bridge was really unnecessary and at times annoying at the terrible script and acting. And a later scene between the guy and gal was not at all appropriate to a movie that could be enjoyed by a larger audience. The ending was pretty stupid. Passable enough for a B-movie, but nothing great and easily forgotten.

Not Sure It Was Bad Enough To Be Good
It's kind of like Sharknado meets Tommy Lee Jones' Volcano. Had some pretty decent zingers though.

“It’s Long Beach, who is going to miss it!”
Earthquakes in Los Angeles are a problem in this disaster flick played mostly for laughs. Although I found it difficult to find the humor in death and bullies, would-be rapists, people dropping down sink holes, a guy crushed by a concrete slab, a guy falling out of a tree...with his chainsaw! The best part of this feature was another wackadoodle performance by Jeffrey Jones as an expert of some sort with dubious ideas and a plagiarized solution to the problem. Yes, fracking is the problem and a Baywatch dude is the villain. Makes perfect sense. Fortunately, I was in the right mood and found this oddity hilarious. Whether or not that was the filmmaker’s intention…

Enjoyable, but I expected a little more because of the title
I wouldn't say great, like San Andreas with Dwayne Johnson, but I also would not give it 1 star. You're either a fan of disaster movies or you're not. I like them as long as the story line is not ridiculous such as with sharks in a tornado. The special effects were good, I liked the girl (the fracker's daughter), the old scientist and the female scientist, and of course the dog. He was very smart and cute. :) I took off 1 star because I thought the movie was over too soon, and we didn't get to see more drama, such as people trying to evacuate at last minute, which would never happen, but supposedly they tried, and power going out, the panic that there would have been, and all the struggles that would really go on.

LOVED IT
It is NOT politically correct-- in a deep way that people who are politically incorrect will recognize. I loved that amongst all the woke baloney usually infused into movies.I Iove earthquake movies for some odd reason. I saw the bad reviews but turned it on anyway because I have low standards for earthquake movies. (The only one I've really hated recently was San Andreas *gag*) And I found it simply GREAT FUN with all the unlikely earthquake action I wanted. I admit some of it was unlikely but I didn't come here for realism... honestly I'm most offended about the hunter who dropped his gun. The path of that bullet was unlikely and I saw it coming! But it was made up for by the later dog poop detail :-)The characters that I found myself wishing CAN'T HE JUST DIE ALREADY went ahead and died. Yay. And then the ending was exactly, completely the way I wished it would be, with another dollop of funniness on top of a catastrophe!

TRES DE-CE-VANT !

What a Ride
This is a unique rendition of an old theme about greed and ecology. It has a nice story line of youthful relationships and an older separated couple learning to get along. It has some heroes and villains and lots of earthquakey stuff and some comic relief. Loved it.
